PRESS RELEASE

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OF KOSOVO

Malaysia welcomes the independence of Kosovo that was announced by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci on the 17th of February 2008. Since July 1999, Kosovo has been under the administration of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) following Resolution 1244 of the United Nations (UN)

Malaysia hopes that this declaration of independence will fulfill the aspirations of the people of Kosovo in deciding the future of Kosovo and protecting the right of the people to live peaceful, free and stable lives. With regards to efforts of the international community to find a solution to the Kosovo issue, Malaysia requests that all parties work together to secure peace and stability in the Balkans.

Malaysia has a Malaysian Liaison Office in Pristina, Kosovo that has been committed to the service of UNMIK since the year 2000. The role of this office is to supply and coordinate aid from Malaysia to Kosovo and also to enable communication between the Malaysian government and the UNMIK. This Malaysian Liaison Office will change its status when the time is right. In the interim, Malaysia's Representative in Kosovo will continue in his/her duties as a Temporary Liaison.

Note: I'm a bit unsure that the word "Kuasausaha" can be translated to Consul in the last paragraph. Kuasausaha denotes a role that is just below that of an ambassador's.--I'm assuming that's a Consul in English Borisblue (talk) 17:59, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
