Move to UIC (International Union of Railways)

The result of the move request was: No consensus for a move. PBS (talk) 09:44, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
Although the term International Union of Railways does exist as the official translation of UIC (Union Internationale des Chemins de fer), the organization is referred to almost exclusively in railway and other transport-related circles by its French-language acronym UIC. I therefore propose moving the article to "UIC (International Union of Railways)" – the parenthesized part of the title serving to disambiguate this from other UICs. -- Picapica (talk) 13:29, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sure the evidence supports that. Google books has 719k hits for the current title and only 18k for the French version. On Google itself it gets a million hits compared with just 55k for the French name. And on their official homepage the logo is UIC with "International Union of Railways" underneath. So WP:COMMON, WP:USEENGLISH and WP:CLARITY would suggest we stay with the current title rather than move to a French abbreviation which has to be disambiguated by the English name anyway. However "UIC (International Union of Railways)" is a useful redirect, so I have created it. Hope that helps. --Bermicourt (talk) 09:40, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
- Many organisations are known by their English name plus a historic or French acronym; eg. last week there was a similar request about the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC). This styling is generally how it is written in prose: Name (acronym), followed by just acronym. I'm unsure what advantages a move would achieve; and given that this request has not been acted on for 2.5 years, has probably been tested by time. —Sladen (talk) 09:58, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Suspension of SZD and BCh
[edit]According to this article on uic.org, memberships of SZD and BCh have been suspended; both are missing from the membership list. Worth to be mentioned here? --User:Haraldmmueller 09:38, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- Umm, last time I've checked, they added back but marked as a grey-boxed "Suspended": [1] and [2] (though company leaders are still dynamically updated). --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:46, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
Should our own list of UIC members be created or not?
[edit]As I would doubt if UIC Vademecum site has much more pointful infos on those memberships. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 10:51, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
