How to improve the article
[edit]Hi, I stumbled upon this article as part of my work with Wikipedia:WikiProject Short descriptions. I have some experience as a social scientist, and quickly noticed that the article was written in the way that a department would advertise its field of study to potential students -- something confirmed by a quick look at the sources. Sadly, I'm not a subject-area expert and so can't contribute substantially to this article without more research, which I can't do at the moment. I'm leaving this comment for some ways to improve the article, some which I'll try to do when I have time. Some ideas:
- Go through a few textbooks on the subject and summarize their contents.
- Confirm the history of the field from an external/critical source, especially on its relationship to Christian missionary work.
- Rewrite parts of the article to emphasize the distinction between the purpose/content of active research and the purpose/content of educational programs
- Find examples of recent research on:
- "Train[ing] students to understand, communicate, and accomplish specific goals outside their own cultures"
- "Prepar[ing] students for interaction with cultures both similar to their own or very different from their own"
- "Their [whose?] power and cultural identity"
- "How the relationship should be upheld with other foreign countries"
- The topics listed in the "Topics" section
I'm sure there are many other examples. It seems that a subject-area expert would be able to help clean up this article significantly. Perhaps recruiting help from Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology would be worthwhile. I look forward to helping improve it. Cheers! - - mathmitch7 (talk/contribs) 23:16, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
