Ordering

The Games and People of Insomniac should be priority compared to the few comparisons between Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch.

For content related to the site, all they have is a link on the external links section. Their site has gone through a lot of layout changes in the past and they have an active forum community. There must be a way to include an acticle about their website. -W.A.C. (7/14/2006)

A violent turn

In the article it says that Resistance: Fall of Man is a violent turn for the company that usually makes cartoony games. I believe it should be noted that Disruptor was a violent game and that Insomniac does not make specifically cartoony games or has been exclusive to that percieved type of game. -TruthQuest

You make a good point. Although do notice that most of their games have been fairly family oriented, and that Resistance is only jumping for the other half of the community thats not up for games like Ratchet and Clank and same for Spyro the Dragon.Aquzenn 01:40, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't belive that RFOM is a violent turn for Insomniac, Infact the opposite appears to be true, Many of their games have been in some way violent, albeit cartoony violence. Insomniac & Naughty Dog

This page says "Contrary to popular belief, Insomniac never borrowed any part or form of the PlayStation 2 engine code or technology from Naughty Dog to use on the Ratchet & Clank games."

Yet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratchet_%26_Clank says that Naughty Dog offered the technology from Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy.

So which one is right? The wrong one should be corrected. 22:33, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Insomniac / Naughty Dog Shared Technology Quotes

I noticed that there is a section stating that Naughty Dog and Insomniac never shared code. I think this needs to be discussed, since, in the Ratchet & Clank credits, it states that: "The Ratchet and Clank background engine was developed using proprietary techniques and code developed by Naughty Dog." Someone needs to do more valid research on the subject. It seems Naughty Dog and Insomniac share more than just "tips." Plus, anyone with any video game and programming knowledge can see how these game engines behave dangerously close to one another. (Naughty Dog's code seems to be the catalyst for a surprisingly large number of PS2 and PS3 games.) I added a segment to the Wikipedia page, but I expect it to be erased. Here's the full, unrevised quote:

Despite these quotes, the credits sequence for Ratchet & Clank on the Sony PlayStation 2 states that "The Ratchet and Clank background engine was developed using proprietary techniques and code developed by Naughty Dog."

Regarding the Spyro license

Lots of people seem to believe that Insomniac Games sold the Spyro license to Universal Interactive (now Activision Blizzard). This however is not the case.

The facts are:

1) Universal had full ownership of the Spyro series since day one of development.

2) Insomniac Games came up with the concept for Spyro.

3) Insomniac signed a contract with Universal to develop 3 games. The contract expired after Year of the Dragon.


(This also applies to the Crash Bandicoot license as well)

I've posted this to avoid any further confusion and unnecessary edits etc about Insomniac selling Spyro.

Ratchet & Clank Universe: Lost and Spaced

Does somebody have a source for this future game in the Ratchet & Clank series? I've checked Insomiac's website and forums, several gaming news sites, and twitter and I've seen nothing about it. Lost and Spaced was the title for one of the comic book issues a few years ago, so I'm thinking this is more wishful thinking. Initial comments

  • "Some employees who left Insomniac Games have founded their own independent companies, such as High Impact Games" - any other examples or is this the only one?
  • "Price was later joined by Alex Hastings, his fellow graduate and an expert in computer coding and programming. Hastings joined the studio in June 2015" - how is this in the 1990s section if he joined a few months ago?
  • "Meanwhile, the team recruited another employee" - this sentence is a bit short and abrupt. I also can't find it in any of the citations in the paragraph. Is the employee a worthy mention?
  • "The family game market was dominated by Sony's competitor Nintendo with games like Super Mario 64, while PlayStation has no similar " - the PlayStation
  • "The team considered developing the sequal a challenge for them" - typo
  • "Spyro: Year of the Dragon was released worldwide in late 2000. After releasing three games in three years, the team needed a break from the franchise" - "needed" sounds a bit informal
  • "According to Price, working with Sony is an autonomous process; Sony can provide input into the development of games but Insomniac has complete control of them" - sounds like a missing quote

On hold

Nice work on this article. I'll leave this on hold once all of the above are addressed. I wrote up a Ratchet & Clank draft a few months ago and intended to bring it up to GA, but that will have to wait until I get more energy... JAGUAR  20:38, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

@Jaguar: Thank you very much for the helpful review! I have fixed all the issues you have raised. High Impact seems to be the only notable company that was founded by former Insomniac's employees, while the rest are really independent developers that aren't really notable enough. How come the Hasting Brothers link goes to old soccer players, one of which died before the events of Insomniac Games came into play?
