Name change

[edit]

This name should be changed into "Izhorian language" to avoid confusion with the Ingrian dialects spoken by Ingrian Finns. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 08:31, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Strongly oppose, the Ingrian language is the canonical name as used by most academic sources (e.g. Kati 2017, Saar 2014, Markus 2010, Gordon 2009...), other Wikimedia projects and relates to Ingria, whence it's from. It's not uncommon to have languages and dialects that seem close, cf. Irish and Hiberno-English. If anything, Ingrian dialects should be moved to Ingrian Finnish (replacing the current redirect). Ingrian dialects should have an article, just as equally as for example Eastern Finnish dialect article should exist. However from browsing, it is clear many articles confused izhorian with the Ingrian dialects, for example the Ingrian Finns article had Ingrian as one of their languages, likely confusing Ingrians and Izhorians. Also the article about eastern Finnish dialects seemed to also confuse the two. I have also seen this happen in other places and media, people believing the Izhorian language being spoken by Ingrian Finns. That is why i proposed a name change to end the confusion, which I had seen alot. Even though the article states they are seperate entities, for some reason I have seen many people recently confuse the two entities, and that is why i got the idea to suggest a name change. However i am not strongly supportive of the name change, it is just a suggestion and i don't mind too much if it is rejected. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 15:16, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
