‘Other People are Committing the Same Egregious Error’ is No Defense
[edit]If a highway cop pulls you over for speeding, you can’t say in your defense, “They’re all doing it.”
If your teacher corrects your bad spelling, you can’t say in your defense, “They’re all doing it.”
Likewise, one cannot defend terrible writing in one Wikipedia article by saying, “They’re all doing it.”
The funny thing is, I have often seen editors respond to people pointing out that a certain standard was set by other articles by scoffing, “Other articles don’t matter.”
This article opened,
“Indira Talwani (born October 6, 1960) is a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.”
That is godawful writing, for which there can be no excuse. When I corrected it, Snickers2686 asserted, “Inconsistent with ledes of similar judicial articles,” and reverted my edit.
A proper response would have been something like, “You know what? This is a pervasive problem among similar judicial articles. Let’s fix ‘em all!”
That Snickers2686 would undo an improvement and restore the inferior version using such a specious rationalization, is a perfect example of why Wikipedia has such a terrible reputation. 2604:2000:1580:415A:1920:48F:A553:49A1 (talk) 09:04, 30 June 2019 (UTC)
- @2604:2000:1580:415A:1920:48F:A553:49A1: Well instead of attacking me can you explain why your change makes more sense grammatically then? Until then, the revert stands.

- I explained in my edit. 2604:2000:1580:415A:1920:48F:A553:49A1 (talk) 09:43, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- The editor is apparently commenting on the use of "district" three times in one sentence. I agree with him or her: Let's clean up the writing in Wikipedia just as if it were a printed encyclopedia with honest-to-gosh, paid editors. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 06:14, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
