Academic Schools
[edit]By way of explanation, I added information to some of the academic schools to reflect the online and regional programs that they offer. These edits are a sort of addendum to the information added recently under special programs, specifically that about IUEverywhere. IUEverywhere is the division through which online programming is offered, but the programs and courses also remain part of the same academic schools/departments under which they and their on-campus counterparts are housed.
More information is needed for each of the academic schools and can probably be obtained by investigating the IUE website. Hirakis (talk) 15:22, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]I'd like to propose adding one or all of the following to the categories listed for IU East: Distance education institutions, Online colleges, Distance Education in the United States. Because IUE offers degrees online/at a distance, I believe it would be appropriate to reflect that by including this article under one or more of the subject categories. I'd like to know what others think about this. Please weigh in with your opinion. Thanks...Hirakis (talk) 11:54, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I have no objections to what you suggest. Fantasyleaguer (talk) 16:27, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Removal of embedded links
[edit]Wikipedia should not, in general, have direct links to outside sites. The one time this is used is as a way of citing reliable sources, although this is considered to be the worst possible way of doing so (see WP:CITE for more details). If someone wants to convert some of these to references, that may be acceptable, but most of these aren't actually references. For example, we should not have a direct link to the different departments at the university, because those are self-published sources, and don't actually provide reference to anything in this article. For the professor, a reference (not an embedded link) to a CV can be acceptable, although it would be far better to reference to reliable secondary sources. I'm going back to the article now to strip out the rest. If you have questions, please post here. Qwyrxian (talk) 01:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think I got most of the embedded links. The idea is that this should be an encyclopedia article that explains information about this school, not a general set of links for people to access those departments or people at the school--that's what the schools website is for (see WP:NOTLINKFARM for info). If there is a single page somewhere on that website that lists all of the departments and/or degrees awarded, that one reference will suffice for the entire section. I somewhat arbitrarily chose to leave in a few links, as they were asserting facts about certification that are more in need of verification. However, we don't really need a citation to assert, for example, that IUE has an English Department. Qwyrxian (talk) 01:38, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi, Qwyrxian.
Based on the information you provided above, I created a reference for the Academic section using the IUE Academics & Programs page. I hope I have interpreted your comments correctly. Thanks for providing some guidance to those of us who are still learning about Wikipedia and who want to be responsible contributors. Hirakis (talk) 02:07, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- That's excellent--exactly what I meant. A few more things to be done. First, the other references need better titles, and ideally more information if available; if I have time and inclination later, I'll try to fix those. If you can, take a look at Template:cite web. That page shows how to use that template for web references. It allows more information to be in the reference than just title and url; if nothing else, adding "accessdate" helps show when the info was accurate.
- Second, there's a reference to US News and World report hanging out at the end of the reference list that should be added to the main text somewhere--what does that article say about the school? I checked, and it doesn't seem to say much other than to list some of the programs. It appears to be ranked as a "Tier 4 School" but I don't know what that means. My guess, though, is that it's not a very good thing; however, we should have a sentence somewhere in the article that says "U.S. News and Report ranked IUE as a Tier 4 school, which means ____." However, I don't think I can get that info, because it's behind a paywall. Does anyone with the Premium Online (or the print) version have more info about the ranking that we can add?
- Third, it would be great if we could add reliable secondary sources to info here. That may not be possible if IUE is not a widely known or recognized school (I don't know if it is), but anything would help--a newspaper article about some award they won, some new government program they got funding from, etc. It helps support the notability of the school.
- Fourth: I'm a bit concerned about the Notable Academic Section. Usually, this should include only people who are notable in the sense of being known outside of the university, not people who are notable within it. It seems surprising to me that IUE has so many professors that would be considered widely notable. Deciding who belongs on the list will be an involved process of looking through bios and looking for other corroborating evidence, though, one that I can't tackle at the moment. I certainly invite others to do so, though. Qwyrxian (talk) 02:20, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Adding to General Info box
[edit]Does anyone know how to edit or add to the General Info box on the right hand corner. I was given the official logo for the school and wanted to upload it but I only know how to upload general images. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Randaknight (talk • contribs) 13:18, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
History section too detailed?
[edit]The History section reads like a college newspaper article or recruitment brochure. There's a whole paragraph on the names of ex-chancellors. Unless these people are otherwise notable persons outside of their university affiliations, I think a simple list in a footnote would be adequate (if we even need that). If we're going to mention chancellors, why not provosts, deans, treasurers and other officers of the university? Lists of names smack of aggrandizement. Other details of history (like campus buildings) can be moved to other sections or abbreviated.Sbalfour (talk) 17:50, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
