[edit]This article seems to be about the same species Sousa chinensis than Chinese white dolphin. They should be merged.--Pere prlpz (talk) 20:20, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, thank you for your above comment. While the taxonomical separation of Sousa chinensis and Sousa plumbea have been inadequately described in previous articles and consequently confused, I am currently in the process of updating this article to provide a more complete, informative, and wholesome article on Sousa plumbea (Indo-Pacific Humpbacked Dolphin). I have provided an edited Lead Section that should clarify the species' taxonomic independence, as well as provide a far more wholesome overview of the species and the developments that I will soon incorporate into this article. Species or subspecies?
[edit]It is confusing that both this article and the one on the Chinese White Dolphin speak of these as forms or subspecies - yet throughout are using species binomial names, not subspecies trinomial names. Which is it? Ptilinopus (talk) 13:29, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Looks like it has been split into 2 species. The article should really be split as well, with this article as a general indo-pacific humpback dolphin article and the 2 species articles with information specific to each species. For now I fixed it up a little.Rlendog (talk) 17:37, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- It looks like the Chinese white dolphin is serving as the species article for S. chinensis so I revised this article to remove information specific to S. chinensis but rather reference the Chines white dolphin article for that information. Rlendog (talk) 19:09, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
"Humpbacked" vs "Humpback"
[edit]It seems this article was initially moved to "humpbacked dolphin" to be in line with the Handbook of the Mammals of the World. The latest marine mammal edition was not released until 2014; in the year since, there has been much conversation regarding the taxonomy of the Sousa species. I feel that this page could be changed to "humpback," as all other Wikipedia Sousa articles use it, and the species is referred to as such by the IUCN, Marine Mammals of the World, the Encyclopedia of Marine Mammals, and the Society for Marine Mammalogy, among other sources. Is there a reason we should keep the current title? (Note that many sources also use Indian Ocean humpback dolphin. Might need to have a discussion about that eventually too.) Requested move 21 April 2019
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Move. No objections after over 2 weeks. I will leave Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphin as a redirect for now, pending the outcome of the other RM, and will have to rely on WhiteArcticWolf and other knowledgeable editors to handle the disambiguation cleanup to ensure all the links are pointing to the correct articles. Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphin → Indian Ocean humpback dolphin – The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin refers to Sousa chinensis, currently on Wikipedia as the Chinese white dolphin. Indian Ocean humpback dolphin is used by the IUCN, Society of Marine Mammalogy, and marine mammal encyclopedias. Furthermore, recent literature has been using Indian Ocean humpback dolphin rather exclusively. WhiteArcticWolf (talk) 20:20, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support. Most uses of "humpbacked" I see from a quick google search are wikipedia mirrors. Iamnotabunny (talk) 08:15, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
- Just to be clear, the request is also to use Indian Ocean rather than Indo-Pacific. The Indo-Pacific species is S. chinensis, while the S. plumbea species the article describes is the Indian Ocean. WhiteArcticWolf (talk) 04:59, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Wrong image caption
[edit]The photograph shows an Indian Ocean humpbacked dolphin (Sousa plumbea) and not an Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphin - in Musandam, Oman. I corrected it. --94.185.25.142 (talk) 10:00, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
Range Map
[edit]The range map for S. plumbea is incorrect, seems like a remnant from separating S. plumbea from S. chinensis. A more recent map can be seen here: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/82031633/230253271#geographic-range or in https://arabianseawhalenetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/braulik-et-al-2015-sousa-plumbea-conservation-status-1.pdf. I'm was to try to remedy it, but I thought I might put it out there on this Talk page because I don't doubt there's someone here who can create the right map more efficiently than myself.
