– To harmonize WP page title of IIT (BHU) & IIT (ISM) with the current page titles of the 21 other IITs. Also, these names are as per IIT system's official website's homepage. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 13:54, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

IIT Varanasi or IIT BHU

[edit]

The institute is referred to as IIT-BHU as per the following sources, so please adhere to the same name.

Thank you, User4edits (talk) 15:25, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

if the full name is gonna be there then I'd suggest using brackets around Banaras Hindu University. ie Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi (IIT-BHU)
Also Banaras Hindu University is NOT the parent institute of IIT-BHU, neither is IIT (as its not a institute as such), both have separate administrations/funding, despite being located in the same campus Criticic (talk) 08:23, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi (IIT-BHU)
This is the most suitable name as the official government act, that turned IT-BHU into IIT BHU uses this name. Criticic (talk) 08:27, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Kindly refer https://iitbhu.ac.in/administration which details the administration of IIT BHU, no person of BHU is even on the BoG. Criticic (talk) 08:30, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Criticic: While the Varanasi is there for standardisation among other IITs, I don't find the need to repeatedly write Varanasi as the same is not used in official terms, and IIT BHU is enough. User4edits (talk) 09:31, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, IIT-BHU, IIT(BHU) or IIT BHU can be used interchangeably and freely as WP:RS use all three. User4edits (talk) 09:32, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yes iit bhu is fine, I meant in the opening paragraph Criticic (talk) 09:33, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Recent Changes by @Tormai

[edit]

I don't think the sections on Suicide/Controversies are needed, as they don't appear in sections of nay other IIT (or wiki pages of any other Engineering College in India) Criticic (talk) 16:45, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The content is on-topic and appears to be well-cited. The fact that something is widely covered in reliable sources suggests it's WP:DUE to include it and potentially WP:whitewashing to exclude it. However, I do see some WP:NPOV editorial/opinionated wording in some of the content, and that definitely should be cleaned up. DMacks (talk) 11:36, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the cited sources are local Varanasi news coverage of National News Orgs, but that doesn't mae them notable imo.
My main issue is no other page of any institute (be it in India or Abroad) contain such sections (especially the suicides section), and this sort of gives undue weight to those topics. https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/mumbai-news/115-iit-students-died-by-suicide-in-20-yrs-101714589735975.html see any other page in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institutes_of_Technology Criticic (talk) 17:51, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DMacks Criticic (talk) 04:39, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If something is covered by a national news org, that sure sounds like it's a notable detail to include. WP is bound to follow what reliable sources see fit to report. If other schools have similar levels of coverage in similar sources of similar topics, I would also support including them in their articles. DMacks (talk) 04:51, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If suicides have to kept, they should be put under controversies section in a paragraph manner with c/e and meaningful sense for readers such as "cases of suicides increased/increasing", rather than a heading called Cases of Suicides and listing each suicide individually.
