Notable alumni

The tag for sources for alumni is now almost two years old. It is more than enough to add sources. I am therefore moving here all the people without a source for which their article does not source it either. Feel free to reinstate any of them with a proper reliable source that they are actually alumni of IT-BHU. I also added quite a few who did have a source, but the source did not mention IT-BHU. In most cases BHU was mentioned, but I don't think this is enough.

--Muhandes (talk) 17:56, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Since IT-BHU is a part of BHU, degrees are awarded by the university. This means that if a person has got a B. Tech degree from BHU he or she is an IT-BHU alumni. All those for whom suitable sources can be found can be reinstated.  Shobhit102 | talk  06:32, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya

I saw the name "Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya" in relation to IITBHU. Can someone explain the connection? --Muhandes (talk) 19:37, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

In all likelihood, it refers to BHU. The name you mention is a literal translation of BHU in Sanskrit. Lynch7 09:06, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Requested move

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was renaming to actual name. While the official web site refers to itself all over the place as "Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University", the home page states: "Vide Notification no. F.No.8-5/2008-TS.I (Vol.-IV) from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2012 (No.34 of 2012) has come into force on 29th day of June 2012 and consequently, the erstwhile Institute of Technology, BHU has become Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi w.e.f. June 29, 2012." Therefore neither the current name of the article nor the proposed rename is appropriate, but the current name is closer to the actual name. Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) VaranasiInstitute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University – I consider the previous move from the old name to the present name ill considered. Per our common name policy, the name of the article should be "Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University". The college website has itself not decided to change the name (yet). The relevant act has been passed by Parliament, but it is certainly not a common name yet (IT-BHU has existed in that name for about 93 years; there's no way that IIT-BHU can become the common name in just a matter of months). --Relisted Cúchullain t/c 18:12, 9 August 2012 (UTC)Relisted again. You may please revisit the website. It has been updated and the IT-BHU has indeed now become IIT (BHU) Varanasi. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.201.49.246 (talk) 07:11, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi (BHU)Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi – With respect to the previous discussion regarding moving the page, the college website has now been updated . Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India are a set of autonomous higher educational institutions linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, as amended in 2012, lists sixteen institutes located at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Ropar, Roorkee and Varanasi. Moreover while the said act lists the names of these institutes with a comma between "Indian Institute of Technology" and the city of its location, commonly the comma is done without since the city is the differentiating part of the name and not just a location. This can be ascertained from the naming of the WP pages on the other IITs. For the sake of conciseness, as per WP:CRITERIA, it is proposed that the name be Indian Instittue of Technology (BHU) Varanasi rather than Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi. This should also adhere better with WP:UCN.  Shobhit102 | talk  07:55, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Support. Agree with the proposed move. Present name seems wierd. Name should reflect the name in the act. Conversion of IT-BHU and its naming was a significant issue and unlike the other IITs its name includes (BHU) and not just the city name so that historical linkages could be maintained. See this article.Pulkit.26mar (talk) 09:18, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Support the change in position of the words, but not necessarily the comma. If the Act referred to omits the comma, so should we.unless the use is otherwise essentially universal. Using the other WP pages as a standard is not helpful, because maybe they should be changed also. Many US universities now use a form like University of Louisiana at Lafayette, but I do not think that is customary in India. A US exception is University of California and a few others, all of whose autonomous branches have a comma. And some places like University of Wisconsin use a dash. DGG ( talk ) 22:44, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
    • Reply. The other articles on IITs previously included commas and were subsequently moved as can be ascertained from this. Moreover the logo on the website no longer includes the comma although the previous version did. Additionally the said act also uses commas with the names of the other new IITs while their Wikipedia pages do not.  Shobhit102 | talk  15:41, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Support. The other IIT articles do not have a comma, and this should not include it either. US universities have varying styles, and they wouldn't be very useful in setting a convention. Even amongst Indian universities, National Institutes of Technology include a comma in the logos, but not the IITs. So if we try to seek some universal convention or precedent for naming this, we probably will not find it. MikeLynch (talk) 03:59, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Support official website uses this name "Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi".--GDibyendu (talk) 18:18, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

students petition

The Institute was to be converted to an IIT by December 2008. But there seems to have been some politics because of which the conversion has not happened. The students of the institute have taken up the issue and been doing various kinds of petitions and protests to have the conversion done soon. 59.183.23.217 (talk) 15:29, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

And on june 29 IIT conversion is completed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hemanth Mooda (talkcontribs) 22:02, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Can someone please edit the student life section? There are so many lists there. It looks clumsy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Navneetiitv (talkcontribs) 01:00, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
