Freedom at Midnight

A very detailed account of events leading to 15th August is given in the book by Dominique Lapierre. It also explains why we became independent on 15th August. If anybody has a copy handy, it may be a great source to cite from -- Lost 07:26, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reference to "freedom", and the article saying "India attained freedom following an independence movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress." are POV and emotional. India was largely self-governing, with elections to state and national parliaments. "Freedom" is far too emotive a word. The progress of independence was gradual, and negotiated, following the granting of increasingly greater degrees of self-government.203.184.41.226 (talk) 03:16, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Independence day in literature

Description of celebration

Hi! This section can be elaborated. The problem is lack of good references. This Yahoo answer page has a succinct yet thorough description, but this can not be used as a reference. So, I'd like to request the editors to try to find WP:RS references for themes described in that site, and add such descriptions to the article along with the references. Content removal from "security threats"

I removed the content describing a small bomb blast in South Delhi and the shoe hurling incident, to maintain summary style. Much larger bomb blasts have been carried out in Northeast on Independence Days with fatalities, even those have not been described in details. Director /Producer name

Among the list of films at Independence Day (India)#In popular culture, only 2 movies have Director/Producer name ( Nemai Ghosh's Chinnamul (1950), Ritwik Ghatak's Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960) ), is it required ? as many other remaining films does not contain Director/Producer names with them. Not only Meghe Dhaka Tara– 3 films of Ghatak have been mentioned there Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960), Komal Gandhar (1961), Subarnarekha (1962), and in the same section we have mentioned creator's names few more times too– Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children, Khushwant Singh's Train to Pakistan, Freedom at Midnight (1975) is a non-fiction by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre– if we mention author's name/director's name for each and every entry, it'll be problematic. Caption of the image

The caption says hoisted flag is a common sight on public and private buildings on this national holiday . There has been changes to the Flag code of India and every citizen can hoist the flag on any day. So my point is its now a very common sight to see a hoisted flag on public and private buildings on any day of the year, not just Independence day --sarvajna (talk) 07:41, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Number of years since Independence Day

For some reason, there seems to be a mini-edit war going on regarding how long ago Independence Day happened. The time elapsed since the first Independence Day on 15th August 1947 and today (31st August 2016) is 69 years, 16 days. Hence, 69 years since Independence Day. However, anons keep editing the page back to say it was 70 years ago.

I think people are getting confused because this year was the 70th Independence Day (the first one happened immediately and then we've had 69 more years worth, so 70). gbrading (ταlκ) 14:07, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Independence Day is celebrated annually on 15 August as a national holiday in India commemorating the nation's independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947, the day when the provisions of the 1947 Indian Independence Act, which transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly, came into effect.
