"Bombed at the box office"

[edit]

According to Wikipedia's own definition of a box office bomb: "To earn this distinction, the film must also fail to earn more than the reported cost of its production, distribution and marketing by a wide margin." The cited articles call the film a flop, but only in comparison with other films in theaters at the time (which is unreliable - this film was independently produced/distributed and was shown on only a fraction of the screens that it's competitors were) and without referencing any information regarding the film's budget or profitability. Without knowing the film's budget it's impossible to know whether or not it was profitable, and therefore it can't legitimately be labeled as a flop by Wiki's own standards. Until more, reliable, accurate information is available, I'm removing the line about the film having "bombed at the box office." I don't disagree, but considering how many known actors appear in the film--presumably only for the paycheck--I think it's safe to assume it hasn't recouped what it paid its actors, let alone its total production costs. 50.72.166.225 (talk) 00:31, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A (lots of known actors) + B (must have cost a lot) = C (bombed). Please see WPSYN - SummerPhD (talk) 04:21, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, not quite. Ocean's Eleven had A (lots of known actors) and therefore B (must have cost a lot), but no one would consider that C (a bomb). Part of the potential problem is we're making assumptions about both its cost and its revenues. We assume the cast took big paydays up front, but for all we know that clown convinced them to work for a percentage of the box office and/or home video gross. We're assuming it made very little money, but that gross is only box office. For all we know, it made some money with home video/streaming/digital downloads. After all, this guy made his nut selling crap on TV. Maybe enough people were dumb enough to buy this that it actually recouped its cost. We just don't know for sure. 50.72.166.225 (talk) 03:03, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
