[edit]I've changed this article from a redirect to fictional universe to an article more like List of fictional locations plus header, because Imaginary World is a more general term (witness significantly greater google hits rate) and closer to the cited non-English equivalents. I am also attempting to bring some organisation to the POV definitionalism which has traditionally surrounded this and related terms. — JEREMY 05:44, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
revisions
[edit]Ok, the revisions refocus matters on the concept going beyond fiction (agreed). Amongst other things, the old "techniques and concepts" secton which essentially dealt with fictional creations, has been transferred to "places" as the location of other discussion on this aspect, and the links have been disambiguated. Can we please avoid wikification of the redirects. RealityCheck 06:29, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]The more I have trouble defining a "fantasy world", which is subject to opinion, the more I like redirecting them to imaginary world. Obviously, fantasy worlds are imaginary. As a section of Imaginary world, the reader can decide for themselves what a fantasy world is compared to others. Consider this a straw poll. Electrawn 01:20, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- This reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the fantasy world article. There is nothing subjective or opinion-based about the genre of fantasy, or that it takes place in specific kinds of imaginary worlds. Goldfritha 01:26, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- My problem is lack of formal definition. I don't think the fantasy genre itself has a proper definition, my goal is to redirect the reader here and let the reader sort it out whether a world is fantasy, a combination (like scifi+fantasy) or not. Electrawn 03:29, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- On what grounds do you assert that the fantasy genre lacks "a proper definition"? Goldfritha 03:45, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- What is a fantasy (novel|world|game), and what isn't? Electrawn 09:28, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- We have an article on fantasy to explain the genre. Goldfritha 22:40, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Precisely, Goldfritha. Fantasy is defined as "a genre of art that uses magic and other supernatural forms". Read my below comments. Aragond 10:49, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- Under normal circumstances, I would recommend a merge, however, the term "fantasy world" seems to be specific enough that, as long as it is referred to on the "imaginary world" page, it merits its own page. Linus 3.14 22:24, November 8, 2006 (US Eastern time)

I believe there are clear distinctions between a fantasy world and an imaginary one, and, as such, disagree with any talk of merger. To be sure, as Electrawn notes, a fantasy world is most certainly imaginary, but an imaginary world is not necessarily fantastic. To take the Wiki definition of fantasy: "a genre of art that uses magic and other supernatural forms". Imaginary worlds do not necessarily do this; in fact, the majority (however slim) of imaginary worlds, I would venture, do not. Aragond 10:46, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

- Consensus is clear: no merge. I'm removing the template. Goldfritha 01:10, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
Why was this split from fictional universe?
[edit]This article doesn't really do anything to distinguish itself from that article. The intro paragraph is just a badly formatted collection of wikilinks to subjects that are probably also merge-worthy. What is the difference between a "fictional universe" and "imaginary world"? Which parts of this article could not be merged into fictional universe or List of fictional universes? Ham Pastrami 16:19, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- I merged it again. The article totally lacks references.--NoduloMan (talk) 13:47, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
More links
[edit]I am adding references on Fantasy Worlds and Geofiction, but I think more links need to be added. It will be good if someone can add more sources. Thanks for any!!!Solar Apollo (talk) 16:27, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Merging?
[edit]Imaginary world is a widely used term, it deserves its own article. Anyways, there was no consensus whatsovereEros of Fire (talk) 17:57, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- It may be a widely used term, but how is it distinct from "fictional universe"? Serendipodous 18:05, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
