Íker or Iker?

Which is it? It should be consistent throughout the article. ITs IKER — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.204.139.134 (talk) 17:34, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

It has to be Iker not Íker...

In Spanish there are no accent marks on capital letters, never. Plus, Iker Casillas name is always written without the accent even though by the spanish grammar there is supossed to be an accent. Proper names never have mistakes, so if Iker Casillas writes his own name without the accent therefore it wont be used. Please change the title of the article to Iker Casillas without the accent mark because it is a big mistake...

  • In Spanish the capital letters have an accent mark, same as with small case. What happens is that there is an allowance for not writing them, which is a remmant of the time of old printing in which it was impossible to use accent marks for newspapers. The matter is much more simple. It is Iker because it is a Basque name.
  • That's right Iker is a Basque name, not Spanish. There are no accent marks in Basque, therefore Iker is written withouth the accent. Plus every Spanish newspaper writes his name without accent and the same thing happens in Real Madrid's official website. Someone should change it.

Requested move

Íker CasillasIker Casillas — As it has been stated above, his forename is Iker, without an acute accent. The form with an accent is correct in Spanish due to grammar rules, but the name in fact is of Basque origin (see Behind the Name), and in Basque language accent marks are not used. The name is written without an accent all over the Real Madrid website as well as that of the biggest Spanish sports daily Marca. In English it means that his family is from Ávila (Castile and León), but that his parents worked in Bilbao (Basque Country) for some time before he was born and liked the name Iker so much that they decided to give it to him when he was baptized. It also says that his younger brother has a Basque name as well, Unai. Therefore, this article should be moved to Iker Casillas. –Kooma 19:27, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Early Life

How about adding something about his early life? His family isn't even mentioned. His father is José Luis and his mother is María de la Carmen and he has only one sibling, younger brother Unai. Welcome to Iker Casillas 101. lol. Yay or nay? I've read plenty of other articles over athletes that mention their families, even girlfriends and ex's (ex gf Eva Gonzalez anyone?). I don't think those kinds of tidbits are out of line at all. So yay or nay? I'd be more than happy to find some sources. 75.170.102.108 (talk) 08:28, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I would like to know something about his famii and personal life if it is posibile

Casillas' height

Raúl is 179 cm or 1,80 as he is listed oficially, not 1,82 cm, so Iker Casillas is clearly 1,82 cm tall, no way 1,85 cm and so we can show pictures to prove it

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.77.17.176 (talk) 19:08, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

The following is copied from my talk page

That reference there is bulls***. That same site says Raul is 182 cm (with Casillas 182.2 cm). But when you look at any photo of the 2 players together, you'll see that Casillas has at least an inch on Raul (see link below). http://www.as.com/recorte/20090421dasdasftb_12/C280/Ies/Casillas_Raul_durante_partido.jpg

211.31.24.149 (talk) 03:14, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

I'd agree that in the photo you linked Casillas appears to be taller than Raul by more than the 2mm claimed in Real Madrid's website. Trouble is that on Wikipedia claims are judged on whether they are supported by reliable sources, which his team's website should be; and definitely not on our opinions and deductions (the latter being termed original research). The only way forward that's going to stick is to find more independent reliable sources and go with the consensus figure. Of course if we accept that the Real Madrid website has made a mistake, it could be that they've made Raul too tall rather than Casillas too short! -- Timberframe (talk) 14:59, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
On the Royal Spanish Football Federation[1] and the UEFA Euro 2008[2] website Casillas’ height is listed as 1.85 cm. Since there are doubts that the figure on RM’s website is incorrect, I’m sure these can be used as a source. –Kooma (di algo) 17:28, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Casillas is 182 cm, he is a little shorter than Ramos who is 183 cm. Raúl is 178 cm, similar to Fàbregas, who is listed like 175 cm but he is 178 cm, he is taller than Villa. There are some new sources indicating Casillas 182 cm. Cristiano Ronaldo is a real 185 cm guy — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.54.198.141 (talkcontribs)

Data

I tried to edit his data for the 2010 world cup, but I think I did it wrong. can someone check the chart for me to see why that 2 was moved out?

Phrasing of the sentence on winning the world cup

In 2010 the national team he captained made history, winning Spain's first ever FIFA World Cup Final. I am not really pleased with how that is stated. Making history is IMHO a judgement. I'd suggest a more neutral formulation, something along the lines of "in 2010, the national team of spain he captained, won their first ever fifa worldcup". I'll make it the call of a more experienced user to edit that though. Please correct me if I am mistaken. --Benedikt.achatz (talk) 21:45, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Iker > Íker

The name of this player is Íker, Iker not. This Wikipedia are accepted tildes in all Spanish or French names. Please move Iker Casillas to Íker Casillas. Satesclop 22:01, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

That was discussed three years ago in this thread, and based on the arguments presented there the spelling without the accent was decided upon. Favonian (talk) 22:08, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't understand that decision. I'm Spanish and I know this. "Iker" is a Basque name, and in Euskera there are no accent marks ("tildes"). But when that name is written in Spanish yes. "Íker" is a "llana" word, it ends in -r, and Spanish it is accentuated. You see this article in the Spanish Wikipedia: es:Íker Casillas. Satesclop 22:22, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Wikipedia does not necessarily follow grammatical rules in naming articles. Instead, to quote from WP:COMMONNAME, "Articles are normally titled using the most common English-language name of the subject of the article." In the present case, it's actually rather simple, as the English- and Spanish-language sources agree. The previous discussion referred to Casillas' player profile at Real Madrid as well as a couple of media references. I've supplemented these with this search at El País (for other readers of this discussion: the most widely circulated newspaper in Spain) and even though I used the accent in the search, all the answers seem to spell the name without it. Now some intrepid Spanish speaker really ought to try and convince the Spanish Wikipedia to rename their article. If I read this correctly, the accented article name is of recent origin. Favonian (talk) 23:18, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
My goodness! One would almost be tempted to think that this is getting personal. Instead of replying to my comments, my esteemed opponent has gone to the Danish (my native language) Wikipedia and renamed the Casillas article there. Favonian (talk) 09:06, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
This just in: the article at the Spanish Wikipedia has been reverted back. Favonian (talk) 23:16, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Biased language

The language used in the first paragraph is not very formal and sounds rather biased. "Explosive shot stopping" and "sheer brilliance" don't exactly sound impartial or neutral.

This isn't a my-team-is-better-than-yours competition where the person who uses the most exaggerated words wins. It's an encyclopaedia. Try to remember that please fanboys. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.145.103.108 (talk) 12:26, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Iker Casillas a striker???

Look... I watch a lot of football. I've not seen Iker Casillas score a goal in my life. (unfortunately he has stopped plenty, though, at the worst of times for the teams I usually cheer for, but that's a separate issue.)

What is this about Iker Casillas scoring 477 goals in 470 appearances for Real? With numbers like those Eusébio, Romário and Gerd Müller would be left with a deep feeling of inadequacy. Someone put an end to this nonsense. --OettingerCroat (talk) 05:06, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

What you have seen is a typical example of vandalism. It's wiki and everybody can edit this article. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who think it's funny (if they think at all) to write bullshit into articles. It's a wiki and you can edit the article, too, so just revert the vandalism. --Jaellee (talk) 09:47, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Casillas as a substitute

I noticed that my change was reverted... "On 22 December 2012, Casillas was dropped by José Mourinho for a La Liga match against Málaga in favor of Antonio Adan." I think that shouldn't be in the article, we have a football player being a substitute in a match, that doesn't seem important in any way... If it grows into a feud, maybe it should be featured in that terms, otherwise it's a pointless statement... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 181.14.142.144 (talk) 01:25, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Casillas Debut

In the article it states that Casillas made his debut for Real Madrid in the 1998-1999 season. However, in the section regarding career stats there are no stats for that season. Why is this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.234.75.43 (talk) 16:14, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Casillas left Real Madrid with a total of 725 matches played, the second player with most appearances in their history, just after Raúl with 741. After 25 years at Real Madrid, Casillas left the club in tears while the club was highly criticised. He has now two great seasons with FCPorto.

Retired from international duty?

Has he officially retired from international duty? From what I heard, he was still hopeful he would receive a call-up and hadn't officially reitred yeet, although he felt his international career was coming to an end as De Gea is the undisputed starter (at one point he said he would stop playing for Spain when Buffon stops playing for Italy). In that case should his international dates be left open? Any help with this would be much appreciated, thanks! Best, Messirulez (talk) 05:48, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

Heart attack?

Is this notable? Sounds serious Inter&anthro (talk) 01:15, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

"Even though"

I edited the information on the heart attack that said that "even though" he is in a stable condition he will not play again this season. This suggests there is usually a causality between the two, that stable condition should mean that a person can go back to life as usual. This is not true, see medical state. It just meant that his condition from when he arrived at the hospital was unlikely to get worse [3]. If you look for other uses of "stable condition" in the news, you will find people who have been shot and stabbed: if they were footballers and this happened at the start of May they would also be unlikely to play professionally for the rest of the season.
