I also question the date. My copy of the album "Wild Women Don't Have The Blues", Ida Cox, Foremothers, Vol 1, issued by Rosetta Records in 1981 has extensive (3 pages) of liner notes on Ms. Cox. It reports that "Ida Cox was born Ida Prather on February 25, 1889, a pisces, in Cedartown, Georgia." The liner notes were written by the producer of the album, Rosetta Reitz. This album is a reissue of the Riverside Records RLP 9374. - WESmith
The date, according to Ida herself (as given to me by her in 1961) was February 25, 1896. Rosetta Reitz exploited the blues ladies, but knew very little about them. I've noted the uncertainty. Eagle and LeBlanc, Blues:A Regional Experience, which many would regard as the most definitive research on blues performers' dates, say that the 1900 census indicates her as aged 12, suggesting an 1888 birth; and that her Social Security application indicated 1894 birth. Anyway, I've mentioned the uncertainty in the text, while noting that many sources - perhaps wrongly - do indeed give 1896. Ghmyrtle (talk) 15:41, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
One of my CDs says 1889, the other says, "There is some doubt as to her exact age (and I, for one, did not consider even the gathering of biographical data sufficient excuse for asking "Miss Ida" a direct question on the subject) but even the 1889 birthdate given by some printed sources may be stretching things a bit . . ." - from the liner notes of her 1961 record with the Coleman Hawkins Quintet. I don't have William Barlow's book which is given as a source for Jelly Roll Morton having headlined at Atlanta's "81" Theater in the 1920s. I have, however done extensive research to verify that claim, but found nothing that might even indicate such a booking. Does anyone know what Barlow's source was? If so, please post it here.
