History
[edit]The information about the mythological creatures described by Celebi does not belong in this article about ice worms as it clearly does not describe an annelid, and ice worms have not been found in that region. Inclusion of this irrelevant datum contributes to misunderstanding regarding the true ecology and phylogeography of ice worms. Essaylang (talk) 22:30, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
I'm not sure if it's at all appropriate for this article, but I only found this article because I was looking for more information about something Alastair Reynolds mentioned in his short story Glacial in his collection Galactic North. Very cool; I had no idea such creatures even existed. Alastair Reynolds said something about a pore over their mouth secreting salts, which appears to just be speculation on his part? The article states that their ice-burrowing method is unknown. Since there's a section Ice worms in culture in this article, I'm going to add the reference. -- plushpuffin (talk) 03:24, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

"Ice worm" as a common name for the genus Mesenchytraeus
[edit]@Essaylang: The article's previous contents dealt with the topic as if ice worms referred solely to Mesenchytraeus solifugus. I earlier tweaked the scope somewhat to rectify this, since this is, after all, a page on the genus Mesenchytraeus, not a WP:BROADCONCEPT article on annelids referred to as "glacier ice worms". It includes 77 species, the vast majority of which do not live in glacial ice. Parts of this problem still remain even in this version.
Your changes, while sourced and factual, reverted the old problem of only talking about the members of the genus which live in ice or snow (including a member of a completely separate genus - Sinenchytraeus). It gives the impression that ALL members of the genus live in ice and snow, which isn't true. Your additions might be better off being placed in their respective species articles rather than here.
That said, I am wondering whether it might be better to split off the common name from the genus article. That way the page on Ice worm can then be used as a disambiguation page for various enchytraeid species which live in ice and snow, while the page on Mesenchytraeus be more accurately about the actual taxon.-- OBSIDIAN†SOUL 13:27, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
- EDIT: Okay as a temporary measure, I've hidden ALL the text which describes individual species rather than a genus as a whole. If you have no objections or suggestions I'll go ahead with separating the common name from the genus page in a week or so. Still a bit busy at the moment in real life.-- OBSIDIAN†SOUL 13:49, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
