Talk:ISO 259-3

This article was nominated for deletion on 8 March 2013 (UTC). The result of the discussion was merge to ISO 259.

I have used the search engine in the ISO website and found no reference for an ISO 259-3 document. There are references for ISO 259 and ISO 259-2, but not ISO 259-3. The document available through the link in the "external links" section is very badly, not like ISO documents I have read in the past. Is this article somehow fake? Or perhaps this was some kind of work-in-progress that never completed? PedroLamarao (talk) 13:36, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is a very real document as far as I know. I don't know why it doesn't appear in the ISO website. Maybe I'll try to find out. The file in the link is indeed not perfect and there are some weird mistakes in it that don't appear in a printed version that I have, but that's concerning the content of it, especially the tables. At this time, a search including "Published standards", "Standards under development", "Withdrawn standards" and "Projects deleted (last 12 months)" does not include a document numbered 259-3. It does include documents numbered 259 and 259-2. It is very hard to believe that a document numbered 259-3 was ever a standard. The document linked in the "external links" section is dated February, 1999. If there was such a project in 1999, it seems to have been cancelled. In addition to the fact that ISO 259-3 doesn't exist according to the ISO catalogue's list of published, in-progress, or withdrawn articles, as PedroLamarao pointed out, the only mention of it I can find on the web is in the word document sourced, sites that reproduce the word document, and sites that source this article. The word document only appears on the faculty website of Uzzi Ornan of the Israeli Institute of Technology. He is a an authority on Hebrew linguistics with many publications in refereed journals, and in some of his published papers he mentions that ISO 259-3 at least reached the final draft stage (ISO FDIS). I'm hopeful I can settle the question of whether or not it was adopted by emailing the ISO and asking them. If it wasn't, then this article may not meet the criteria for notability: Wikipedia:Notability.

Thank you for your message and interest in ISO. According to our database ISO 259-3 is a deleted project which never reached the stage of published International Standard.

Based on this information I'm nominating this page for deletion.
