Multicast snooping
[edit]@Dsimic: do you have a source (or two) that indicates that Multicast snooping is a synonym for IGMP snooping. This source indicates that multicast snooping is something different. ~Kvng (talk) 17:22, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
- Hello! It all depends on the context, the paper you've linked describes a CPU cache coherency mechanism, while "multicast snooping" may also refer to snooping a multicast protocol in a computer network, as described here and here. I'm so glad you've brought this up, and IMHO it would be the best to turn the Multicast snooping redirect into a disambiguation page that would refer to both meanings. How about that? — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 10:15, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
- I don't think that the source I supplied represents an important use of the term. The main thing I found in a search for "multicast snooping" was a lack of results. So I'm worried that we're creating new terminology here. Thanks for supplying your sources. Your first source defines "multicast snooping" as a general term that could describe IGMP snooping or PIM snooping. Your second source defines "multicast IGMP snooping" (and I have no objection if you want to create a redirect for that term) but I don't see a "multicast snooping" mentioned. Based on the first source, we could create a disambiguation though the disambiguation would not be particularly useful since we have no coverage of PIM snooping. The alternative is to delete the Multicast snooping redirect. I have reverted the synonym claim in this article until that can be substantiated. ~Kvng (talk) 15:16, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
- The revert is fine, but I'm not really sure what to do now with the redirect. Another use of "multicast snooping" is visible here, so it shouldn't be an invention of some brand new terminology. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 15:25, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
- How about changing the redirect link so it points to the Multicast article, with some additional description of the multicast snooping concept? — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 15:48, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
- I am comfortable leaving it as it is. I don't think Multicast is a better target. Other easy acceptable options are: converting to a (lame) disambiguation or WP:PROD. ~Kvng (talk) 16:27, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
- I agree that turning the redirect into a disambiguation page would be rather useless, at least with our current coverage of the term. Perhaps it's the easiest to just leave it as-is. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 16:43, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
mDNS and print spooling
[edit]I came here to find out why I had to turn on IGMP Snooping on my router in order to get my mDNS (AKA Bonjour AKA Avahi AKA ZeroConf) services to work across networks. I was able to see hostnames being advertised on another WiFi network on the same router, thanks to IGMP Snoop, but why? I hoped Wikipedia could give me a general sense, but not only do I not understand why, it doesn't even look like that's what it is supposed to do. Perhaps a new introductory paragraph is needed? 24.16.239.30 (talk) 18:27, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- It looks like Cloudflare's "Learning the Network Layer" has a good definition of IGMP: "The Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is used to set up multicasting groups. IGMP snooping allows network switches to be aware of these groups and forward network traffic accordingly." 24.16.239.30 (talk) 18:30, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
