The -1987 part, is that the year of proposal or year of adoption? Same for -2008. RJFJR (talk) 03:54, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's adoption. Proposal dates not very interesting, as some stanrdards are never finished. mfc (talk) 11:02, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article is a little confusing because the 854-1987 was superceded by 754-1985 immediately, but no mention of why it was adopted two years after its successor. Don't know how to fix that Chris2crawford (talk) 23:57, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also: "IEEE 754 specifies floating-point arithmetic for both radix 2 (binary) and radix 10 (decimal)" looks like it describes 854 (similar to text in the introduction)? It would be nice to include a summary of the differences between 754 and 854. Chris2crawford (talk) 23:59, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it would be nice to see that fixed.71.63.160.210 (talk) 07:01, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

IEEE Std 854-1987 was obviously not superceded by IEEE Std 754-1985, since 854 was adopted later, and 754-1985 did not cover decimal (or any non-binary) floating point. IEEE Std 854-1987 was in practice superceded by IEEE 754-2008, which did include decimal floating point. --Brouhaha (talk) 17:45, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
