Merge discussion

Is this a real name? It is a bit nonsensical, and seems to be made up just for this article... I think we might have to find a more appropriate name. FunkMonk (talk) 20:07, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps William Harris knows? FunkMonk (talk) 20:07, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello FunkMonk. I am not aware of any English word for a hunting dog that specializes in hunting felids. My opinion is that we should refer to WP:COMMONAME. We need to ask ourselves what would a person accessing the English-speaking world's online encyclopedia first look under to find out about a dog that hunts felines. I would suggest under Hunting dog, an article that is only 18kb in size and receives 310 visits per day. This article - Hunting Dog (Felids) - is only 9kb in size and gets around 40 visits per day. I would recommend a relocation of this material under Hunting dog as a large chapter specializing in "Felid hunting" or similar, which would give an article around 27kb in size - still quite small compared to Gray wolf or Dingo. Although Hunting Dog appears to have come into being as a simple listing of breeds, it has since further developed to include more than just that. One might even propose a WP:MERGE on the grounds of "Overlap: There are two or more pages on related subjects that have a large overlap" if you wanted to approach it formally. Good idea! I'll add the merge tags, just to see if we can get more views on this... FunkMonk (talk) 07:52, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I do not believe that this article meets WP:NOTABILITY - "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list." It is also unclear why the information under "Similar breeds" exists - not once does it say that the dogs mentioned hunted felids. The whole section on "Cougar hunters" is uncited, lists some dog breeds and what they might hunt, and throws in a hopeful "and cougars" every now and then which is unconvincing. The page appears to be little more than a tribute to the extinct "panther dog", dressed up as a Wikipedia article. Regards, William Harris • (talk) • 11:58, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There could be an argument for moving the content of this article - after some rationalization - to a new article called "Panther dog", because that is what it is really about. This Talk page could be transferred across to it, and "Hunting dog (felids)" becomes a redirect to Panther dog. That would neatly put everything into its right place. William Harris • (talk) • 00:47, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it would seem every distinct breed warrants an article. FunkMonk (talk) 10:38, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And yet, the original creator of this article did not do so. So we have two options, merge with "Hunting dog" or create a new article. Perhaps it might be best to rationalize and merge first, and then see if others further develop it under "Hunting dog" to a point beyond what would have been just another small stub on an extinct breed. One thing is certain - the conjecture from dog breed sites can definitely go unless they supply credible references to historical or scientific articles. Other editors appear to be silent on this topic. Regards, William Harris • (talk) • 20:40, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have done a severe prune. It is clear from the regulations that dogs are used for cougar hunting in some parts of the US today. However, if editors wish to list certain breeds for doing so then they will need citations to support that. Regards, William Harris • (talk) • 21:25, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
With thanks to the work done a year ago, I WP:BOLDly merged this to hunting dog. That page deserved some subsections and it was unreferenced. Based on the lede of this page, I put it under a subsection of "Molossers", figuring that they could be discussed similarly to Terriers. I encourage copyedit to further work it into that article or to provide better heading names. —Ost (talk) 14:29, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
