I removed the phrase "And, because they were black" because of its racism and prejudice. It is possible that because of their oppression they were illiterate and unable to keep records, but that has nothing to do with their genetics - only the way they were mistreated. I could replace it with "And, because they were an oppressed people" - but just like the former statement, it is not necessary and ultimately not relevant to the point.
