Hulu Talk Page

  • Hulu was recent hacked which gave way to www.openhulu.com maybe a note of it should be made 19:44, 11 December 2007

I find it hard for sites like OPENHulu to claim they are hacks when they legitly use the embedding feature encouraged by Hulu.com themselves. I personally linked the entire series of Firefly to multiple sites and there was no issue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.202.195.97 (talk) 21:48, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

I definitely agree with user 66.202.195.97. Fact: OPENHulu did not hack any of the available videos but merely just embedded all shows on their site so that those living outside of the United States can also watch the shows. I have taken a look at the OPENHulu site and have also experimented by embedding some shows on my own blog and the results confirm this fact. Gabbers511 (talk) 17:20, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm not from US, and I still can't watch hulu content embedded in places such as OPENHulu. 84.249.126.241 (talk) 13:10, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Hulu.com website seems to be experiencing an extreme slowdown. I wonder if this is due to the article in Time Magazine, or maybe its being HACKED again? I can't even load a video clip now. Mario2k4 (talk) 13:36, 24 April 2008 (UTC) mario2k4

Content

To give a reader a sense of the scale of this enterprise, perhaps a section detailing the currently available content should be made available. Many of the shows that are offered are over 30 years old, suggesting the seriousness of the endeavor. This would be akin to articles about individual networks usually having a list of programming. (by User: SteveCoppock)

User PM says, "I would like to add a comment in regard to this comment by SteveCoppock above. Content that is 30 years old does not suggest in broadcast and media studies, and training the seriousness of an endeavor. Content that is 30 years old does not have as great a value as today and is by an overwhelming majority, cheaper to license to get the rights to air/show on the Internet and other portable devices. Some content that is old is in the public domain and it is free. All companies are serious in their intent. I agree that a section detailing content would be useful on this page and other web video portals, and/or search engines for media SEO. I would not feel comfortable to note that it has the "breadth of content" and term that a serious endeavor unless one can compare their content to other sites. Another term besides "serious" might best be used once the extent, quality and popularity of the content is determined. Content might be considered valuable, if it is used often by the public or generate consumer interest or advertiser interest. The latter might be described as providing a "serious" value to the bottom line of the company. The former designates a ratings based value to drive advertising or subscriptions, etc. and usually increases the sales of the media enterprise. Thoughts? User PM

Steve Coppock continues: "As this would entail a massive amount of internal links to articles about the shows, I will cut & past the currenty (as of today) list for others to begin to create links once they establish what the actual article title is. SteveCoppock (talk) 18:09, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

User PM adds, in media the term content and programming are often used and perhaps there is another wikipedia page that has a section title from another video website or portal so that we can try to standardize the terminology across the wikipedia listings that relate to internet or IP video. TV professionals tend to use the term programming as to programming departments that program the shows on TV and these terms/definitions are commonly found in textbooks, association reports, annual reports, etc. Content is likely a better term since it does not confuse with computer programming. Thank you for your contribution to provide new content notices Mr. Coppock. PM

Ratings Attribution Needed

User PM comments, a line of copy on the hulu page says, "Hulu is also quickly becoming a competitor with YouTube". How do you attribute this as fact as Hulu just came out of a private beta and was not open to general public until March 12th, 2008? What ratings services are they getting this from and what are the ratings? What is the quantitative value of "quickly"?

If you are comparing Hulu to other sites/enterprises like it, one might look to the services of Veoh, Joost and others. They may best be competitors as other video sites that aggregate commercial format. The ABC video website might be a competitor as many others might fall in as a competitor for advertising dollars, sponsorships, or subscriptions. YouTube commonly presents short form content for the most part on their video portal, while these other video sites commonly have long form programming or episodes or movie length content and may have short form content as well. YouTube and many other sites are looking at acquiring content and partnerships and distribution licenses from various places. This line of copay sounds like a forward looking statement that is the hopes of the owners of the video portal. It lacks attribution, but could not be attributed if an executives said this or a press release using that as attribution.

A quick review of the statistics on Alexa.com note the site's popularity is growing. However, for the website to be a success, advertisements might be key or the key, and statistics are normally considered of more validity provided by the likes of Nielsen, and/or those doing a survey based study and an actual use study with clients engaged in media. One must also consider if the website can scale to handle the numbers of that of YouTube, and those statistics may come from those firms who monitor video quality, responsiveness like that of KeyNote Systems. I am not involved with either company. Both Nielsen and Keynote have competitors and I use these purely as examples of just a couple of the companies that are known by those engaged in media, internet broadcasting, webcasting, and streaming media. In addition, when one signs up to a service and provides data, that information is of value to monetize the video portal/aggregation service, and the number of subscribers to a website are often looked at as a number of interest to judge against the popularity of other sites or competitors.

Perhaps this statement should be removed or attribution added in a short time frame. User PM

Atrribution Needed for "expected by some"

User PM comments, "Who does "expected by some" mean in the copy on the Hulu page, "Hulu is also quickly becoming a competitor with YouTube and is expected by some to become its competitor"? One might say all video related websites are competitors to YouTube. Was there an analyst, financier, and/or journalists etc, that were quoted prior to today in regard to this. If so, perhaps the original writer could provide this attribution. If not, one might consider this a public relations marketing copy statement at this time. Pmiles (talk) 03:39, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

I am new to the editing on the Talk pages, so any feedback or Wikipedia instructions would be appreciated if I am not following the format. Pmiles (talk) 03:39, 19 March 2008 (UTC)User PM

Censoring

Apparently the films being offered have been censored, so a link to an article that acknowledges this will need to be found. SteveCoppock (talk) 18:26, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

This info is generally out of date. Hulu does not as a rule censor any movies (to the best of my knowledge, all or almost all are the same versions as the DVD releases. -- IlyaHaykinson (talk) 01:42, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
I can't back this up with a link, but I know that they don't censor all of their stuff. I was watching The Girl Next Door, and it wasn't censoring anything in that.66.194.118.10 (talk) 12:35, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
they used to censor, now they do not. However, but to view MA content you have to be logged in and 18 (17?) or older. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.203.241.80 (talk) 02:23, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Anywhere to put this little factoid in here? Hulu isn't normally available outside the U.S., but Dr. Horrible is/was the exception to the rule - this webseries was made viewable through the service internationally as well. JaffaCakeLover (talk) 13:39, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Mirror section

I think we should get rid of the mirror section of this article, it is irrelivant now that the site is public. --Ncusa367 (talk) 20:14, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Removed about the mirror

Seemed irrelevant to me and not encyclopedic. 68.226.119.187 (talk) 21:16, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Encyclopedic (good or bad) means sourced and ”Verifiable”.--Hu12 (talk) 21:32, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

The existence of a no-longer-updated copycat site is verifiable, but is not exactly relevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.174.101.64 (talk) 07:19, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Infobox spacing bug

The infobox on the top right causes a blank line of white space near the top of the article. The problem is a bug when no |screenshot= is specified. Would be nice to have a screen shot. See Youtube for example. The screen shot is the roll-down at the bottom of the infobox. -Colfer2 (talk) 05:16, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Article has become an ad

I am adding the written like an advertisement tag to the article. If you compare the version of March 11, 2008 to the current version, then the difference in tone and abundance of peacock terms are striking. It happened in several stages, mainly due to edits by 68.174.101.64 (talk · contribs):

  • March 11 tranche of edits - added peacock quote by NewsCorp pres. The quote is not bad in itself, but the context could be reworded.
  • March 18 tranche - deleted controversies. Then editor Hu12 reverted the deletion, saying "unexplained removal of sourced content".
  • March 19 tranche - updated from "expected to offer" to "platform that offers a continuously increasing array of exclusive, premium-quality TV shows", and more sentences that read exactly like ad copy, mixed with factual info. Some is not even factual: "continuously increasing" is wrong so far.
  • March 19 tranch #2 - added another peacock term.
  • March 20 edit - deleted the same controversy as March 18, this time with an explanation. The matter concerns the beta period, so is probably stale, but might be of historic interest. This time no one reverted the deletion. Two refs, probably to blogs, are gone.
  • March 22 tranche - added a "Reviews" section, with a long list of excerpted praise quotes. Identical to how you would blurb a movie poster, for example.
  • March 17 tranche - increased "Reviews" blurb text by 40%.

Aside from minor reversions, the above edits stand and have been an overall disaster for the tone of the article. We need to work on:

  • Extracting the factual material and removing the ad talk.
  • Cutting down the reviews and reading them to find what balance was intended by the reviewers.
  • Checking for contrasting reviews. I have at least one to start with: "Hulu: Half finished", March 12, LA Times, though it is an LAT blog. OK if complemented with other sources.
  • Compare to competing services.
  • Likewise, add historical context. Right now a reader coming to this article does not get a global view of where Hulu fits into the media landscape.

Any ideas? I will start with the written like an advertisement tag and work on the above as I have time if the consensus is good. - Colfer2 (talk) 04:03, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Remove ad speak, step 1

Any help fixing this article back to its comparatively good, WP:NPOV state of a few weeks ago would be appreciated. As a first step, I am working on the terrible "Reviews" section. The sources were quoted in an even more biased way then I expected. Every article so far has "on the other hand"-type qualifications, sometimes right before or after the blurbed text. So this is what I did:

  • Expanded the quotes pulled from the first few sources. They are probably way too long, but it gives you an idea of the previous bias. They have interesting ideas that could be worked into various parts of the main text and cited, instead of quoted directly.
  • Commented out the remaining blurbs that have not been vetted for bias yet (that is, fixed). With the expanded quotes above, the section ends up being about the same length as before.
  • Work-in-progress, pitch in.

-Colfer2 (talk) 15:37, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

In light of Colfer2's couterbalancing edits in the "Reviews" section, I have gone ahead and removed the "ad" maintenance box at the top of the article, as the new, negative reviews no longer make the article sound so particularly one-sided. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.174.101.64 (talk) 16:50, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I still think the section looks POV. I would like to remove the "Reviews" section altogether. I've never come across an article about a commercial site or product with a list of reviews before. It makes the article even more like an advertisement and it's simply unneccessary. We could rewrite the "reviews" section into a "critical reception" section and quote from them somewhat, but an entire section of lengthy quotes is not what Wikipedia needs. Graymornings (talk) 00:10, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Remove ad speak, step 2

Thanks 68.174.101.64. I rewrote the intro and most sections. Still to do, if anybody wants to:

  • TV Shows
  • Movies

I tagged both those sections advert. -Colfer2 (talk) 17:32, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Jason Kilar

Today I reverted a bunch of promotional text (diff) added by 68.174.101.64 (talk · contribs), including such things as the pronunciation of Jason Kilar's name, and peacock phrases like "he demonstrated the simple and streamlined look and feel of the site" and "the presentation was aptly titled 'TV 2.0.'" Some useful things could be gleaned from it and the Youtube of the presentation linked ("Jason Kilar's 2008 NAB Show keynote: "TV 2.0: Video When, Where and How you want it"" (Video).) But the text about it added to Wikipedia was overwhelmingly ad speak by an anonymous editor, so I reverted it. The useful aspects I think would be:

  • comparison to Youtube, copyright, etc.
  • the term 'TV 2.0' if used in unbiased sources.

The anonymous editor has already commented on my Talk page, as follows:

Other opinions? -Colfer2 (talk) 17:22, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Note that anonymous I.P. 68.174.101.64 is the same one that contributed all the adspeak we are still unwinding, documented by the diffs above, at Talk:Hulu#Article has become an ad. -Colfer2 (talk) 17:32, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Misuse of the reviews section

I removed the "reviews" section, since it was being misused for quote mining. If you want to write about public opinion, do so in a "reception" section with proper sources both in favor and against. The text removed is below. — Kieff | Talk 09:48, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Extended content

Initial reviews of Hulu upon its launch in March 2008 were generally positive.

Hulu is actually the most promising new way for consumers to view TV shows and movies online since the almighty iTunes... [It] distinguishes itself through only allowing "top-shelf" content [and] the viewer is incredibly crisp and clear compared with what YouTube and even most network sites use...

Still, Hulu is clearly a work in progress: Certain series only have one or two seasons available, and others are missing completely... The full-length feature films... vary... from the blockbuster... to the random... Plus, there's no music content... (The site has struck a deal with the NBA for sports content.)

When pressed for first-week numbers, a Hulu spokesperson claimed that users and streams had "increased," but declined to offer specifics (while in its beta-testing stage, however, the site was all too willing to cite its initial 5 million users). Some independent tracking seems to corroborate this...

— Tim Stack, Entertainment Weekly[1]

...just as the Internet is poised to destroy commercial television, it may also rescue it. The life raft is called Hulu... The site puts the shows and movies front and center. No registration, no special players. Click on The Simpsons. Get The Simpsons...

If Hulu catches on, there will be more ads and a less pleasant viewing experience...

For Hulu to become a true YouTube Pro—a site with complete movie and television archives—would require a historic level of corporate cooperation. For now, the site reminds us of the joys of television as a communal experience—One Nation, Under Pop Culture.

So far, the most popular episodes reflect the limited offerings and the geekiness/maleness of the early adopters... But when the voting and commenting crowds arrive, and more women show up, and more shows and movies get added, Hulu has the chance to be a fascinating microclimate.

— Michael Agger, Slate[2]

Hulu's offerings are still sparse, and users have to deal with a variety of minor annoyances. But the combination of TV shows and movies with personalization and social features makes Hulu a fun site for free, legal online viewing.

— Rachel Metz, San Francisco Chronicle[3]

While it's now another fledgling site with limited name recognition, Hulu has the potential to be much more: the most addictive time-killer since instant-messaging, the biggest thing to hit TV since the digital video recorder, the next big step toward the day when TV and the Internet are one. Hyperbole? Maybe a little.

— Joanna Weiss, The Boston Globe[4]

I thought I had fixed those quotes, which initially had been mined for the good parts as you say. I think reviews are helpful, but of course they have to reflect what was actually written, and among reviews the balance of opinion as well. The editor who turned this article into an ad really caused some problems. Deleting useful information may be an overreaction though. Assessing Hulu - does it work well? what's on it? how was it received? how popular is it? - are essential to describing what it is. -Colfer2 (talk) 14:20, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Cleanup

I've edited and rearranged some of the content in this article.

  1. Removed "high-quality" because it is a relative statement. High compared to what?
  2. Added "ad-supported" to the lead phrase because this is an essential quality of Hulu.
  3. Moved the social networking feature of Hulu (video clips) to a "Features" section, since it is not relevant enough to include in the intro. Also rephrased.
  4. Removed statement about Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog because it is not relevant and unsourced.
  5. Rearranged "Content" sections as "Content providers".
  6. Removed "Technology" section because it was redundant (the intro already mentioned Flash) and not relevant (why is it significant that they use RoR?).

There were also several other small changes such as removing the statement about downloading videos and general copy changes for clarity. --Beefyt (talk) 20:58, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. -Colfer2 (talk) 21:18, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Criticism?

I'm not a wiki guru or I would add it myself. I think there should be a section, or at least a comment noting the fact that on HULU's own website, a huge amount of their content, once you click on it, gives you an error message saying "unfortunately, this video is no longer available" and attempts to redirect you to less desirable content. Happy cricket (talk) 05:32, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

I use Hulu quite frequently, and have never had that issue. Other than personal experience, which could be caused by things other than the site, do you have any proof of the occurance, a link of it being major problem?66.194.118.10 (talk) 12:38, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

I think there should be mention that content on Hulu can have an "expiration date." Titles such as Heroes and other currently running shows sometimes have expiration timers upon them. Similar to how certain shows have expiration timers on On Demand services. For example, the Heroes page ( http://www.hulu.com/search/heroes?sort_by=relevance&type=episode ) only goes back as far as episode 9 of the current season. For people like myself, who work nights and often can't always get to the site to watch within the time limit, we can miss out on the shows and are forced to go to other means (either with the copyright holders' permission, like Netflix Instant Queue, or through streaming video sites the copyright holders do not approve of) to catch up on the shows. It doesn't necessarily need to be listed as a criticism, but it should be mentioned in the article that not all content will be available at all times. UncleThursday (talk) 14:44, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a user guide nor Consumer Reports. We are an encyclopedia. If these items have become (widely) discussed in third party publications, then we may consider them for content within our article. -- The Red Pen of Doom 18:44, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
There needs to be a criticisms section in the article. Over the last two weeks hulu has deleted much of its content, opting to go with only the "five newest episodes", etc. Its shooting itself in the foot, but that goes without saying. --98.232.181.201 (talk) 10:29, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Wired Article

I was wondering if anybody thinks that information from the Wired article, or the fact that it had a pretty big article in Wired should be noted. Thanks, 68.195.52.30 (talk) 20:30, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Do the writers get paid?

I have been wondering about this since I started using Hulu some months ago. Do the writers get paid? The whedon.info webmaster said, last December, that television and movie writers get nothing for Hulu content.[1] That was before the WGA strike. What about now? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Darkfrog24 (talkcontribs) 19:24, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Availability outside the US

Are there plans to add a section about Hulu's works on trying to expand the service to out of the US? It's something that is worth adding, I don't know much when I tried to see a section of category in the site, I was met with a popup like warning that they're trying to make it available out of the US, and ask your email and your region in case you want to be notified when the service is available in your area. 189.4.250.18 (talk) 19:37, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Probably not - Wikipedia is not an advertisement. So unless a reliable source is for some reason discussing this, in some encyclopedic context, there is not much reason to have it in Wikipedia. -- The Red Pen of Doom 23:56, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

profitability?

I have been wondering how much revenue Hulu has been making, and how much operating cost they have. I assume they are losing money. Is there any source that has info on this, and maybe it should be included in the article? In the meantime I did a search: hulu profitability70.57.70.45 (talk) 12:41, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Money

So is it free? That might be worth stating explicitly since it's quite a big shift in distribution method from television or purchased downloads. There should be some discussion of the economics of it. Presumably the income is coming from advertizement? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.11.196.206 (talk) 00:57, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

If I am not mistaken, there is a monster in Dungeons and Dragons that is either called a Cthulhu or Cthulu that eats brains by using tentacles protruding from it's head to wrap around someone's head.(The Cthulu in actual mythology does not do this; it's merely a monster that has lots of tentacles) This is interesting because tentacles are seen in all the "brain mush" Hulu commercials. In fact, until I saw the thing about the real name, I thought it was named Hulu because of this mythological monster. --24.233.226.116 (talk) 15:06, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Some Controversy Should Be Placed in Here?

When Hulu was getting started, I remember that it was a move done by the studios who couldn't play nice with Hulu, or at least that's what the perspective was from the blogs.

Now, Hulu is an a bit of a feud with boxee.

Do these things merit some discussion? 67.171.93.144 (talk) 01:49, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps they do if you find WP:NPOV coverage in reliable sources to back any statements made that do not constitute giving undue weight in the article to the contentions. -- The Red Pen of Doom 18:33, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Note that the reliable source coverage itself doesn't have to be NPOV in order to be used, but our presentation of the information here on Wikipedia does. Usually NPOV here means presenting both sides of the argument clearly, rather than supressing or avoiding mention of the arguments. Blogs as a rule of thumb are not very reliable sources, but of course, wikipedia doesn't have firm rules so do whatever you feel would help improve wikipedia. --...but what do you think? ~B Fizz (talk) 23:45, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Victim of success, deletion of episodes

In the last few weeks, several shows have been removed completely (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Breaking Bad for example) as their owners have become concerned that the use of the site is cannibalizing DVD sales. RoyBatty42 (talk) 16:53, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

I noticed the same thing. Hulu's most popular show, Family Guy, now only has the five newest episodes available. They used to have about a season and a half posted. Strike one. People came to Hulu because youtube deleted most of the Family Guy material posted on the site. What the hell is going on? Doesn't this go against what Hulu set out to do? Have removed text "In mid June 2009, the number of episodes for TV shows available on Hulu was greatly decreased." as episodes are often set up to be trailing and as seasons are ending, episodes are dissapearing, also it was not cited, and seemed to be original research...I do not oppose something being added directly from the sources above, perhaps with more accurate dates, not what one person happened to notice in June 2009...an it is a shame that there are less episodes, but when DVD sales drop regardless, due to it being a dying format, i'm sure Hulu will be a lot more awesome 173.48.62.136 (talk) 00:34, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

The you tube controversy

i think that the article doesn't even cover most of what is going on in you tube, and it goes way beyond the family guy controversy, this is about the blatant use of the site's tab feature to show TV shows, anime and other things. the old interface had just user videos and now i see these disgusting tabs that are added due to Hulu. it's probably not meant to be added, but this is something i believe should be added. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.93.41.91 (talk) 00:50, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Hulu Resolution in Web Broswer (on Mac or PC).

The article states in the first paragraph 288p, 360p, and 480p resolutions are offered. I have seen 720p also, it's states HD at the top while playing ("HD" instead of "480p" etc.), 720p is the offered resolution along with 480p, 360p, and 288p. I don't see this very often, but it's there on a few shows.

I don't know why it's not virtually every show, (because virtually every show is produced in HD, 720p or 1080i), possibly because of bandwidth limitations of offering EVERY show in HD simultaneously? If this is the case, then 720p will likely become the norm for a couple of years (before 1080p and up). If this is not the case, then it would be for restricting HD content and limiting the possibility of video piracy? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gatortpk (talkcontribs) 07:22, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

TV Availability

I noticed in this article that there is no mention of the availability of television shows on the Hulu website. Depending on the show, the availability of full episodes ranges from 3 to 10. It may be helpful for people to know that they cannot watch any episode of any show on the simple version of Hulu. Of course, with Hulu+ one would be able to watch any episode from any season, but may only be able to watch the latest 3 or 4 with the simple Hulu. I am making an edit to the page to reflect this, so people who read the page know they cannot watch every episode for free, but instead must subscribe to see all of the seasons/episodes.68.41.143.27 (talk) 16:19, 17 January 2011 (UTC)MW 1/17/2011

proposed addition to features

The following is suggested text to be added, if approved, to the Features section. It briefly describes the feature 'autoplay' and the break timer that I only saw during autoplay.

Autoplay allows the viewer to play videos in queue or play list sequentially without a key-press. The advantage is that if you are playing something in the background, there is no need to manually start the next item. The disadvantage is that the autoplay feature default is 'on' and if you forget to turn it off, it will play continuously until the three hour break timer prevents the next video from loading or, if disabled, the queue or play list is depleted.

James thirteen (talk) 18:40, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

The most recent change made autoplay manditory. There are paying subscribers that are commenting that they will no longer pay for a service that will not allow them to turn off autoplay. View the comments yourself at <http://www.hulu.com/discussions/>.

Availability section needs updating

The most recent information re: international availability of Hulu is nearly 2 years old. It needs to be checked and updated - surely in 2 years we'd be closer to international versions of Hulu being available. Or not. 70.72.197.66 (talk) 21:00, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

"Original Content" Section Out of Date

A lot of the original content section seems like it hasn't been updated for a long time now. For example : "Some of these programs will start airing in 2012" (italics added). It sounds a couple of years old already. There's probably a lot of additional information that has arisen since then. At the very least, I think the language should be changed to past tense.

Thoughts? --W. T. Perkins (talk) 18:32, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

  • The whole article is very much out of date. It could be seen by some as an indication of how irrelevant, Hulu has become in the face of competing (and internationally available) services like Netflix and iPlayer, but regardless, I think someone in the know needs to give this a top-to-bottom revision to reflect its status as of 2014, not 2012. 68.146.70.124 (talk) 15:13, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
    • I don't think it's an indication of how "irrelevant" Hulu has become; it's just an indication of that no one wants to actually update this article. But yes, we should do this soon. 213.163.32.241 (talk) 06:19, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
      • Maybe it is a sign of irrelevance. I've been requesting the Availability section be updated now for well over a year (and no, I do not have the resources nor knowledge to do it myself) and still nothing. It's also been quite a while since I've heard of any "Hulu-exclusive" series announcement. Amazon and Netflix seem to be where the action is, though they have the same availability issues as Hulu in many cases. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 17:39, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
        • I stand corrected on one part of what I wrote last week as a Hulu-exclusive Stephen King series has now been announced. But my other points still stand. In fact updating the international availability section is more important than ever as 11/22/63 is likely to increase interest in Hulu, and not just in the US. If this major series ends up being restricted to the US due to Hulu's issues, that's a big deal. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 15:07, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Alternate distribution

With Hulu announcing original programming, yet still failing to get international coverage, I think it might be worth noting that some shows are being picked up by alternate broadcasters. I don't have the info in front of me, but I do believe it was indicated that the Stephen King series was supposed to be broadcast by someone else in Canada, for example. (Though it sounds like that show might be dead in the water.) This may become more relevant given news today that the just-cancelled Fox series The Mindy Project may be picked up by Hulu.[4] That will be useless to non-American fans but if Hulu cuts a deal with, say, the international version of Netflix, or Crackle or a standard broadcaster, that would be notable. (In any event, if Hulu is successful, this is notable in and of itself as it'll be the first time this platform has continued a network TV series.) 68.146.52.234 (talk) 15:32, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

South Park section notability?

Is the South Park section at all relevant? It obviously belongs on the South Park article, but here it doesn't seem any more notable than it would be for Hulu to purchase any other show. ± Lenoxus (" *** ") 01:20, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

This section just seems like a blurb from the marketing folks. When did WP become a place to advertise features or content. This is one of the reasons why I have lost trust in this site, and why its usefulness has been compromised. If I want to read ads about Hulu, I'd just go to their web site. I guess when Comcast is the majority holder / owner, it's OK. Wish I could promote my business on WP. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.194.39.86 (talk) 18:26, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Canada

I think there needs to be another source for the statement that Canada's online advertising market is too small to support Hulu. The source given is a blog related to anime that tries to justify why a company's anime titles aren't being made available in Canada. If the online advertising market was so small, then why is Crackle able to provide a complete cohort of programming in Canada? Why can most YouTube-original programming be viewed in Canada? Never mind that Netflix is in Canada (albeit a different on in the US). I won't flag it but I'd feel more comfortable if another source was provided. Right now the only source essentially tries to justify why a company is too lazy to arrange for alternative delivery of its programming. Meanwhile, per my post above, I added an example of alternative delivery re: Mindy Show. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 17:22, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

I found an additional source in The Toronto Star. This article verifies the original claim, stating "there are two big reasons that it’s not available in Canada: our small size and relatively small online advertising market." I'll add the citation. Penguino35 (talk) 22:42, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

Bandwidth and data usage requirements?

How much bandwidth does Hulu require and how much data will it use? These are the aspects that are not mentioned in the article but which are important in deciding whether someone can consider using the service. A lot of this is related to technical information that is also missing about the security of the system. There must be a secure player involved, but does it allow you to store a movie for later replay, or can the content only be viewed once? I'm considering an Internet plan which only allows about 1 GB/day, which might clash with Hulu, or might be okay, especially if I can download at slower speeds and replay the video at my convenience. Does it need continuous access to the DRM server, or can it just check in from time to time? Or maybe the download includes a single play option even if connectivity is lost? All of these questions are critical to a neutral evaluation of the service. I'm going to try to get the information from Hulu, but their point of view is NOT neutral and cannot be trusted. Hulu buys rights to international movies, but not shown internationally

It is noteworthy that despite Hulu's very limited viewership and essentially only in the USA, and Hulu's never-ending claim over many years now to be working on making films available internationally, that they have been so aggressive about buying rights to movies all over the world. Many films made in EU that are not shown anywhere. Here in EU, this is serious problem. We can't see movies made here. Awards section

Hi, I'm Hulu C (talk) and I work for Hulu. I'd like to help update the Hulu page while remaining as unbiased a possible. I understand that as a paid contributor for Hulu, I'm highly discouraged to make edits but I would still like to help. To start things off, I've created an Awards section that I've put in my user space (transcluded below for reference). Please take a look and let me know what you think.
