Voice

[edit]

This article has a bit too much voice, and it needs to be more formal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bandors (talkcontribs) 17:38, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Earliest

[edit]

I can't see that the references support "As a result, he was able to produce China's first printed publications in colour, using a technique known as dou ban yin shua.[7] [8][9]" - colour printing has "Michael Sullivan writes that "the earliest color printing known in China, and indeed in the whole world, is a two-color frontispiece to a Buddhist sutra scroll, dated 1346". Color prints were also used later in the Ming Dynasty.[1] In Chinese woodblock printing, early color woodcuts mostly occur in luxury books about art, especially the more prestigious medium of painting. The first known example is a book on ink-cakes printed in 1606, and color technique reached its height in books on painting published in the seventeenth century. Notable examples are Hu Zhengyan's Treatise on the Paintings and Writings of the Ten Bamboo Studio of 1633, and the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual published in 1679 and 1701.[2 - Sickman & Soper's standard Yale History of Chinese art]". Johnbod (talk) 01:50, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I got that from the WDL ref (citation 8 in the current lineup), but you're right, there are a number of sources suggesting that earlier colour printing techniques existed. For the time being (since I'm only dipping into Wikipedia for a few minutes today) I'll add a modifier, but I'll do a bit more research and expand the article over the next week. Much obliged for the catch. Yunshui  13:00, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
After doing a fair bit of hunting, I think it's clear that although an important figure in the history of colour woodblock printing, Hu certainly wasn't the first exponent of the art, despite what the source says. I've amended the article accordingly. Yunshui  09:50, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer: QatarStarsLeague (talk · contribs) 04:42, 4 June 2013 (UTC) This seems like an excellent, succinct article. Review will proceed in a few days. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 04:42, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks QatarStarsLeague. You'll find that much of the article is sourced to the Ars Orientalis article, which is behind a paywall at JSTOR - if you'd like a copy to check the references, drop me an email and I'll send you the PDF. Yunshui  10:04, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would be unnecessary. As long as this source properly adduces all it says it does, I will trust that is does. I other words, I will take your world for it. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 02:02, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lead & Infobox

[edit]

Both are fine!

Biography

[edit]

"Hu held minor political office..." What office exactly? Please answer that question in the article if possible.

I think I got that from the Ars Orientalis source, but on closer reading it seems to refer to a quote from Wen Ruilin, which is unlikely to be factually accurate in any case; it also doesn't specify the office (just that it was in the Secretariat). Given the unreliable nature of the original source and the fact that the statement doesn't really fit into the flow of the text there anyway, I've amendeed to a slightly expanded sentence about his retirement (sourced to the more reliable Du Jun). Yunshui  07:20, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is the best thing to do. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 13:33, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seal carving

Ten Bamboo Studio

Excellent here as well.

Superb!

Conclusion

[edit]

This is a superlative article! I can see an immense effort was consolidated into this article. Once my one little query is addressed, then I will pass this article. Gōngxǐ! Congratulations! QatarStarsLeague (talk) 02:02, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To be updated with high-res copies

Per MOS:CHINA, the only real alternative is {{Infobox Chinese}} - I'll see about adding it in. Yunshui  08:58, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Better? Yunshui  09:04, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Even better, now I've merged the infoboxes - good call, Hymn and her, thanks! Yunshui  09:11, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
