Name of the new team
[edit]The article should answer: When the team moved and changed their name to the Titans, why was the expansion team named the Texans instead of naming it the new Oilers? (That is, why didn't they mirror what happened after the Browns moved and became the Ravens, and the new Cleveland team became the new Browns.) Tempshill 05:28, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
LA's indifference a "mystery"?
[edit]This sentence was minor, but a laugher: For reasons unknown and unexplained, Los Angeles seemed to be indifferent with the prospect of being awarded an NFL franchise. No real progress seemed to be made toward securing a suitable stadium (both the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Rose Bowl are aging facilities). --uh, there was a lot written in the LA Times and many other major media sources about the LA area's issue with taxes and public funds for the stadium (as well as the less interest in the average LA resident). I'll have to dig up an article and remove this humously uniformed statement. -- Bobak 21:21, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
New name Vs. New Oilers
[edit]1. The Oilers name has been "retired" by The NFL to keep the winning traditions in Houston 2.Texans was chosen after an name contest 3.The Titans still old the name and records of the Oilers 4.Most people hate bud adams in houston.
Reloaction to Los Angeles
[edit]you should put in that the team is moving to Los Angeles.

Should AFL/NFL history in Houston be removed?
[edit]If this is article is based on the Houston Texans why a history of football in Houston. I feel the what is said in the into of the article is enough. The History of the Oilers is covered in the Titans article. Thoughts? If we want to cover the history of NFL Football in Houston we should create an article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mickeyp2814 (talk • contribs) 17:28, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit]The article is told as it is a story and from a person point of view. Also there are no citions verifying what is being stated. --Mickey 18:37, 30 December 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mickeyp2814 (talk • contribs)
- after rereading the article and trying to find facts to support the article I realize that there is a LOT that is not correct or may be correct but the evenets are not right. Also there are several pages that link to this page for it's content and it would be nice if the content was right. One think I saw that was not correct was McNair almost buying the Edmonton Oilers and moving them to Houston. This is false. It was Les Alexander, the owner of the Rockets, that almost did this. I can not find a solid website stating McNair was ever involved in bringing Hockey to Houston. I am still looking but most seem to have read this article and based their info off of it. I am going to still research and get this right! --Mickey 19:51, 30 December 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mickeyp2814 (talk • contribs)
More about the Oilers trademark, etc.
[edit]I did a little work on the section about the history of the "Texans" nickname and logo. The previous version has a VERY dubious statement about the Oilers trademark. The trademark is not unavailable because it was "retired": on the contrary, it was unavailable because it is still in use. The Tennessee Titans (who played as the Tennessee Oilers for a while) still own the trademark and they still actively use it on merchandise, etc. They also take the field on occasion in "throwback" Oilers uniforms. We don't really know if Bud McNair and his partners even wanted to use the old nickname and logo anyway: it is very conceivable that they wanted to start with an entirely new identity for their team. (The Cleveland Browns situation, by the way, was totally different and has nothing much to do with what happened in Houston, even if both the Texans and the revived Browns were repopulating NFL markets which had been abandoned during the 1990s.) Finally, the section still has an uncited story (even after I edited it) about McNair and the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs personally agreeing to let the new Houston club use the "Texans" nickname, which was formerly used by the Chiefs when they played in Dallas. It is actually more likely that individuals below the owners' pay-grade made the deal. Timothy Horrigan (talk) 01:12, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Beginning of Article
[edit]The term "American football" isn't an npov term, as it implies a non-American bias. Nobody within the United States uses the term "American football", the term used in the United States for the sport is "football". There was a weak, diluted and consensus towards keeping the term American football even though it's inaccurate and biased, so I figured omitting the term "football" altogether would be a compromise. Doc Quintana (talk) 14:47, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- Omitting all mentions of "American football" from American football articles just makes the matter more confusing, not less. Americans do call their kind of football "American football" whenever there's a need to distinguish it from other types of football, for instance in the context of an international encyclopedia that discusses all sports known as "football". The term is totally neutral, and will be recognized by basically all American football fans.--Cúchullain t/c 15:14, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- For the interested, the main discussion that led to this is at Talk:Football#Naming_Standardization_In_Different_Codes.--Cúchullain t/c 15:34, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- I would like to see the proof for your claim because you are completely incorrect. Americans refer to Association football as soccer, not football. There should be a uniform standard for usage of the term throughout the encyclopedia. I am trying to respect the tenuous consensus on the Football talk page by omitting the term altogether when it is POV, but if this attempt can't be respected, i'll do what I have to do ensure that the encyclopedia remains unbiased towards any one football code. Doc Quintana (talk) 16:36, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- At talk:Football I gave three references in which Americans refer to American football as "American football"[1][2][3] Here are some American books that use it:[4][5][6] It also appears in the name of some football organizations past and present, such the American Football Coaches Association and the World League of American Football. It is abundantly clear that Americans use the term "American football" when there is a need to distinguish it.--Cúchullain t/c 17:31, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- And WP:IAR does not give you license to edit war against consensus.--Cúchullain t/c 17:33, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- The consensus isn't clear enough to call it a true consensus, so I don't see the point in it preventing the improvement of the encyclopedia as long as civility remains as it has here. I tried to respect it nonetheless by removing the term altogether, but if another compromise isn't promoted, i'll ignore it completely to help the encyclopedia. Doc Quintana (talk) 19:32, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, the consensus is clear: there's no support for any major changes, so we default to the status quo. You should not make any more sweeping changes of this kind without clear community support.--Cúchullain t/c 20:04, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
- There was no status quo, just look at NFL and FA articles now and the wording that was used, it varies from article to article at will without any reason; standardization was the whole point of the rfc and that goal failed miserably, so i'm just going to have to do it myself unless an MOS standardization for all football codes can be produced one way or another.

- Since the RFC "failed miserably", then ther's no consensus to standardize them, so leaving them unstandardized is the status quo. I wouldn't recommend continuing to change them without a clear consensus to do so. - BilCat (talk) 05:47, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
- And you need to revert all the other NFL team articles that you have changed in the past few weeks back to their original wording. I watch only 3 WP NFL team articles, so those are the only ones I've corrected. I've left the other alone so as to avoid an appearance of stalking. Please note that if you continue to enforce your changes against consensus, proper steps will be taken to prevent you from further disruptive editing. - BilCat (talk) 01:11, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Doc Quintana, this change is highly inappropriate. It should be abundantly clear to you that there is no consensus for your change, here or anywhere, and you've insisted on restarting the edit war. Seriously, do not do this again, or we're going to have to seek administrator intervention.--Cúchullain t/c 12:40, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

The history section needs a paragraph or two
[edit]There should be at least a paragraph or two in the history section, while maintaining the link to the history article. That will whet people's appetite to read the fuller, separate article. Not long. JUst a brief summary. --Bruce Hall (talk) 04:19, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Houston Texans Year of existence.
[edit]I want to challenge the year that the Houston Texans were established. I believe they were not established in 2002. I have edited it along with a reference as evidence however it apparently wasn't enough.
I have proof and valid points as well. I found a video on YouTube surfacing were the franchise name logo and colors were revealed on September 6, 2000. How could the organization be established in 2002 when their name and color revealing occurred two years ago. The Texans history even stated that in 1999, the team owners were awarded a team to complete in the NFL as the 32nd franchise.
Carolina Panthers who were another expansion team in the 90's did not "joined" the NFL until 1995 yet they were established in 1993. My beloved Green bay packers joined the NFL in 1921 yet they established in 1919 and the Arizona Cardinals established in 1898, long before the NFL existed.
I have been a Packers fan since 2005 and been following the NFL since 2005. That year of establishment of the Houston Texans needs to get changed or this page will not be valid nor accurate. Bluhaze777 (talk) 13:54, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
I'm changing the year. These are valid statements. Bluhaze777 (talk) 00:03, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
- The team came into existence as a coprorate entity in 1999 (at the latest.) During 2000 and 2001, the team adopted a nickname, hired a staff, got the new stadium built, etc., etc. Several free agents players were signed in late 2001. The Texans didn't begin playing till 2002. The infobox correctly reads "First Season: 2002." Timothy Horrigan (talk) 17:38, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
