Reference
[edit]The links on Reference Notes 2 and 3 do not work. One leads to a site called Questia, the other to a non-existent page on the Houston Public Library site. Not sure where to look to make appropriate changes, but they seem to be part of the first note which is for a book. Offeiriad (talk) 18:07, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- @Offeiriad: Thank you for pointing this out! To get saved copies of websites you can go to http://web.archive.org and put in the dead URL. You will be presented with a calendar of saved webpages. To preserve a copy, you can archive it at http://webcitation.org. It is good to have redundancy so that if one way becomes inaccessible, you have a second way - For the book, I put {{pageneeded}} as it's good to have specific pages WhisperToMe (talk) 10:50, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Note: Houston Chronicle articles 1985 onwards are available from the HPL website
[edit]If you have a Houston Public Library card you can get online copies of Chronicle articles beginning in 1985. You can access them here: http://www.houstonlibrary.org/newspapers (see "Houston Chronicle" and click the link) - Just provide a library card number and you can access them.
This does not include Houston Post articles or Chronicle articles from before 1985. For those, you have to go get microfilms at the Houston Public Library Main Library, the University of Houston Main library, or possibly other places. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:58, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Short citations
[edit]There are long and unruly citations for the article written by Cheryl Knott Malone. Is there any problem using short citations with the following format: "Malone (1999), p. XX." ? Oldsanfelipe (talk) 19:49, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
W.L.D Johnson Library
[edit]The article reads, "The branch, auctioned in February 1962 and shortly afterward demolished except for the cornerstone, was replaced by the W. L. D. Johnson Library in Sunnyside, dedicated on June 16, 1964." It seems misleading to say that the WLD Johnson Library replaced the Carnegie Colored Library. First, the Carnegie Colored Library was opened during the Jim Crow era, but it was closed after the Houston Public Library system had desegregated. The previous location had been in the Fourth Ward, but the new library was located in Sunnyside, several miles away. While both neighborhoods were and are African-American, the article seems to suggest that they are interchangeable. The article should be re-written to indicate that the Johnson branch was established to serve the Sunnyside area, but without reference to the Carnegie Colored Library. Oldsanfelipe (talk) 13:31, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
The last lines of the cited source are: "The library that was considered a replacement for the Colored Branch opened at 3511 Reed Road, in a predominately black neighborhood. City and library officials dedicated the new facility, named the W. L. D.Johnson Sr. Branch in honor of one of the founders of the original Colored Carnegie Library, on June 16, 1964 (Houston Public Library, 1966, p. 17)." Malone (2007), p. 673. Please note the awkward opening phrase of the first sentence, which is also in the passive voice. The author is not claiming that the Johnson library is a replacement facility, and she indicates that this was merely a legal maneuver to condemn the building for the new freeway. Oldsanfelipe (talk) 14:29, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Desegregation
[edit]Desegregation was slower than the article leads us to believe, "The Houston library system was desegregated in 1953." When I provided updated information for Malone (2007), I had not yet read it. However, Malone makes it clear that only the central branch of HPL desegregated in 1953, and there was no official announcement or publicity put out by the city. The Kleiner article from the Handbook of Texas Online says, "The first two permanent branch libraries were opened in 1925 and 1926. Library use was desegregated in 1953, one year before the Supreme Court decision on the issue." At least three branch libraries were opened after 1926 and before 1953. Is there anyone else who has access to EBSCOhost who can read the Malone article? Oldsanfelipe (talk) 14:45, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
