This piece suggests that the name of House Island derives from the fact that it was the site of an early European house. Maine historian James Phinney Baxter seems to suggest that it was House Island, rather than Cushing Island, where the English explorer Capt. Christopher Levett built a home in 1623-24 and left a group of men behind. (Levett never returned.) Does anyone have anyone thoughts on which island that settlement was located? Fort Levett is on Cushing Island, but perhaps it's House that is the approximate venue of Levett's building. Thanks!MarmadukePercy (talk) 23:56, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
