category link?
[edit]Should this be linked to the category for Foreign hostages in Iraq ? - Brewthatistrue 29 June 2005 23:59 (UTC)
- No, because this article is not about Iraq specificly. The parent category famous hostages would be better although I'm not completely happy with it. It should simply be "hostages". Wipe 30 June 2005 01:48 (UTC)
- On a related note why is there a section on the USA specifically? It seems really odd. doopa Sept 2009 —Preceding undated comment added 18:32, 14 September 2009 (UTC).
Merge with Hostage crisis?
[edit]Shouldn't article Hostage crisis be merged with this one? The topic is pretty much the same... The Merciful 17:51, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Redundancy, improve by merging paragraphs
[edit]There is some redundancy between these two paragraphs -- can someone merge them?
"Major powers, such as Ancient Rome[1] and the British who had colonial vassals, would especially receive many such political hostages, often offspring of the elite, even princes or princesses who were generally treated according to their rank and put to a subtle long-term use where they would be given an elitist education or possibly even a religious conversion. This would eventually influence them culturally and open the way for an amicable political line if they ascended to power after release."
and:
"The Romans were accustomed to take the sons of tributary princes and educate them at Rome, thus holding a security for the continued loyalty of the conquered nation and also instilling a possible future ruler with ideas of Roman civilization."

Globalize
[edit]There is a worldwide view problem in the modern era section Hostage#Illegal_hostage_taking:
- it's dominated by the USA legal situation (see comment above)
- the International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/instree/takinghostages.html is mentioned as just an afterthought to the USA instead of as a major legal aspect in XXI-st century law (and it doesn't yet appear to have its own wikipedia article)
- probably Colombia is a country where hostage-taking of rich families' children is extremely common
- there must be other national legislative approaches and frequencies of occurrence known.

The section name "Illegal hostage taking" probably also needs renaming, to something like "XX/XXI century legal situation", but this needs to be literature-researched better first. It may well be the case that hostage-taking only became illegal in the XX-th century, but this probably could become obvious from e.g. a subsection about the convention.
