Post-Civil War Work
[edit]I came across this priest as a benefactor of Sherman Coolidge, who became a leading Native American activist in the Progressive era, and wondered how they had met. I noticed that Rev. Southgate lived in Falls Church, Virginia (a suburb of Washington DC) after his retirement, and wondered if he worked as a missionary in this country as well. However, I don't have time to go to Charlottesville to check out his autobiography. In that (racist) era, Native Americans were sent to the Hampton Institute in southeast Virginia for acculturation.Jweaver28 (talk) 09:17, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
