Executions
[edit]Name | Year of birth | Date of execution | Crime |
---|---|---|---|
Andrew Vere | 1836, Scotland | August 15, 1870 | Murder of Amos Cheale at St Arnaud, Victoria |
Robert Francis Burns | 1840, Ireland | September 25, 1883 | Murder of Michael Quinlivan near Wickliffe, Victoria[1] |
Henry Morgan | 1828, Tasmania | June 6, 1884 | Murder of 10 year old girl, Margaret Nolan, the daughter of John and Bridget Nolan (nee Curtis) at Panmure, Victoria [2] |
These three hangings were of course at the Ararat County Gaol, which closed in 1886 (and reopened in 1887 as J Ward, the section of the Ararat Asylum used to house the criminally insane). The construction of Her Majesty's Prison Ararat post-dates the hangings by more than 80 years and I believe also the last capital punishment carried out anywhere in Australia.MrAngy (talk) 05:46, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
