Real World References/Trivia

As for Homeworld 2, I spotted a number of references to existing places, ideas and such, like the level Garden of Kadesh. Maybe worth adding and enhancing? Lloeki (talk) 07:33, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

rumours are not facts

The sequels section mentioned that HW3 has basically been confirmed and that it will be available within a year. This is not the case, neither VU nor Relic/THQ ever officially confirmed the license transfer, much less a HW3. 84.56.229.34 23:15, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

So much for that idea... :-| 69.165.146.94 (talk) 17:53, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

More Condensed Backstory Overview?

I think this page needs a more condensed version of the backstory overview. While I appreciate the rich backstory, it's just so huge that a casual reader unfamiliar with the game would just get totally lost. Could someone maybe write down a brief "cliff notes" version that only takes up a couple paragraphs and only covers the salient points (something someone who hasn't played the game could understand upon first reading)? User:Joylock 19:00, 29 Jul 2005 (CNT).

I've done a little abridging. Whether it's enough is another matter, but I find my revision to be concise enough without cutting out important information. — Prizm 17:49, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

_

A change to the external links section - http://www.geocities.com/udingus/index.html - which featured a useless 'fan-site' containing 'must have' tools which were infact, quite useless. Granted, the uninitiated would believe a recorded games viewer would be handy, but in actuality, its quite useless. 'Smurfs' are simply players who play under a different name (much like Wikipedia's sockpuppets) for various reasons (such as not wanting to be bothered during a clan war, harassment, etc). The 'grav alert' tool would technically be a cheat IF it didn't cause an error in muliplayer games (if all players do not have the same version, a 'out of sync' error shows and odd things start to take place). Secondly, I change the description of the relicuniverse.com site - it is not simply 'another website about relic'. Formerly known as homeworlduniverse.com, it is run by a few then-pominent individuals in the Homeworld community (I say then as I don't believe the Homeworld community is very active (I stopped playing over a year ago)). --SaintEmpire 16:28, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I added a link to my fanpage back (http://www.geocities.com/udingus/index.html)... To the idiot above who removed it: why be an idiot ? This page is a FANSITE. Without fansites like mine the game dies. To the comment of the tools being useless: is guarding against buffer overflows useless ? Is organizing game recordings useless ? The grav alert tool doesn't cause any multiplayer syncs (examine the source code that is included with it and you'll see that it only examines the packets of the recorded multiplayer game and can't possibly cause a sync). Only a trivial advantage can be gained in SOME matches by useing the grav tool (I made it mainly as an exercise in programming to see if I could do it). Any skilled player can spot a gravwell before it comes without any tool. I suggest you uninstall your MOD if you are getting sync errors during multiplayer games. Sadly, the troll who wrote the above shit most likely will be back to remove my site again - such is life.

First, please: No personal attacks. Secondly, while I understand your enjoyment of Homeworld (it's a great game!), Wikipedia is not a place for self-advertisement or aggrandizement, no matter how honourable the goal. Because of this, I'm reverting and temporarily protecting the page. Phil Bordelon 03:15, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Why no mention of soure release?

Homeworld is now open source, the company set it free- no mention in the article?Borisblue 17:08, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

Find the date and add it to the article. Someone should be able to clean it up. (I actually came here today to find such a reference, since a no-CD crack for the latest patch is hard to come by and isn't really necessary now that it's open). --CCFreak2K 09:33, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

First quote

I'm wondering what relevance, if any, the first quote has. Yes, the human homeworld is Earth. Yes, Luke's homeworld is Tatooine. That has nothing to do with Homeworld the game. If anything it should link to the word 'homeworld' in Wiktionary. Although, as Wikipedia isn't about defining standard english words, I'm removing the first few lines entirely. Really, Homeworld deserves a better introduction than a definition and reference to Star Wars... --Twile 18:43, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Storyline is wrong

The storyline is completely dependant on which faction you play as. If you play as Taiidan then you fight the Kushan to reclaim the homeworld in exactly the same storyline. If you play as Kushan then you fight the Taiidan in exactly the same context. The only difference is two units in-game. Therefore this should be changed, it gives the distinct impression that you ONLY play as Kushan. --82.198.250.73 12:26, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Ok, when I have time and am logged in I will completely fix this set of articles. It's not written by anyone with actual experience of the game. --82.198.250.73 12:32, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
I don't even know how to start to rephrase this, but I have done my best by changing the tone in the Kushan (Homeworld) and Taiidan articles. Can someone help? --The1exile - Talk - Contribs - 21:43, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
There's an argument to be made here (not one that I'm 100% convinced by, but that I feel ought to be raised) that the sequel fixes which version of the original game is "canonical", in much the same way as Jedi Knight II proceeds from the light side ending of Jedi Knight, or C&C Tiberian Sun carries on from the GDI ending of the original C&C (etc. etc.). (Unless the sequel is similarly flippable between the two, and our article on that is also irredeemably biased at present -- I never actually finished the first game.) Also, I seem to recall that the accompanying material in the manual focuses on one side over the other, but maybe I'm misremembering. --Bth 09:54, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
I firmly believe, both from reading the manual and playing/being familiar with Homeworld: Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 that the story is based around the Kushan fighting the Taiidan. The in-game videos might also confirm this (in fact, I do believe that they do). The ability to change your "race" seemed to me like a gimmick, and was removed/not included in the other games. --CCFreak2K 12:24, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Um, not sure what you mean by "the in-game videos might also confirm this," since I'm playing as Taiidan right now, and it's talking about the evil Kushan Empire trying to kill us for breaking a treaty saying we wouldn't use hyperspace travel. They purposely made two sets of videos for whether you wished to be Taiidan or Kushan. However, for simplicity's sake, I'd recommend just putting at the top of that section that, while playing as Taiidan, the roles are reversed. VegJed 13:13, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Homeworld disambig

Homeworld has two other meanings. One is the generic homeworld - homeplanet of the spacefaring race. Second seem to be philosophical (see [1]). For now I made a small definition of generic homeworld at Core Worlds, but I feel it deserves its own article. Do you think this article should be moved to Homeworld (game)? Homeworld as a generic term was after all why the game was named so, and it is used in many novels, films and such.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 15:48, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

You're right. "Homeworld" is a generic (sci-fi?) term for the planet that something came from. I'd suggest launching a disambiguation page. I also suggest putting it up to a vote. --CCFreak2K 12:26, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Removal of 'Kiith' Listing

It seems completely out of place in the article, of which is based more on the technicalities of the game rather than its universe. Further, despite the game universe being rich in story and setting, as far as the game goes, they play a very little role in the actual campaign of the game. 69.192.6.50 07:12, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree, while they are mentioned here and there, they play no major part in the story at all. I think this can be removed.--208.104.110.149 11:44, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Didn't read this until after I'd already done it. I moved the information to the Kiith page, which oddly enough had less information about each Kiith. Because as you said, the history of the major kiith really doesn't have any importance to the game (you can play through the whole thing without even knowing what kiith means). --Twile 19:52, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Cleanup tag

I'm starting to go through and clean up the article to the best of my abilities, hoping to sweep through the whole Homeworld series of articles and fix them up a bit. After I've gone through the article, unless anyone can come up with further reason to keep the tag I will remove it. --Twile 19:54, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

...Aaaand seeing as I checked through the article and think I cleared up some parts of it, I'll remove the tag. It was non-specific, if there are specific concerns to be addressed then whoever finds them can put up a more specific cleanup tag at such time. I'd be more than glad to fix it then. --Twile 22:34, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Copied from Talk:Main Page

I looked at the Homeworld page. I played the game a while ago, i didn't know there were so many people who knew enough about the games and the back story to write such detailed articles, just for a game! There are also quite a few cross-references for it, there's a lot to cover and it's practically all covered. I don't know, i just think it's pretty nice. -- Schadenfreude red 03:03, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

better history / explanation

what about the people who have never played this game, or someone who wants to play it now? the one section talks about cataclysm and HW2, but what happened to the franchise, etc.... i know the history is out there... for the fans that wish it was still around, what happened? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.93.145.61 (talk) 03:23, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Create a (disambiguation) page

I'm suggesting to link the term "homeworld" to the Core worlds article, as this is what "homeworld" actually is defined as. I know that most people will probably be looking for the game, but this is a encyclopedia after all. I then suggest to create a head-note link to this article (i.e. the game) as well as link to the "homeworld (disambiguation)" page, listing all of the articles related to "homeworld"s.

Fair use rationale for Image:Homeworldss-01.jpg

Image:Homeworldss-01.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Story as metaphor for zionism

Just a random thought, but I was recently listening to a radio program that talked about the establishment of Israel in the mid-20th C, and it reminded me a lot of this game. Here, it's the Kushan searching for their homeworld, just like the zionists wanted to establish Israel. I would've dismissed this were it not for the arabian sounding names of the places and bases in the game; as someone pointed out above, Kadesh is actually a real place in the middle east. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.168.110.122 (talk) 17:27, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it's a metaphor for "Zionism" per se - very little in the game relates to any real-world events, situations, or locations. There's Kadesh and probably a few other names, and I suppose you could call the destruction of their adoptive home a "holocaust"... but in the grand scheme of things, we're talking about a game where a single giant colony ship travels from planet A to planet B, fighting various enemies along the way. If anything, it relates more to the biblical account of the exodus from Egypt, but even that's a stretch even if you throw out the sci-fi setting. 69.165.146.94 (talk) 17:46, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Not Canon?

This page says that Homeworld: Cataclysm is not considered a canonical sequel. Mind explaining that one to me? That sounds false.76.24.145.157 (talk) 06:13, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

It's non-canon in the sense that it wasn't made by Relic Entertainment, probably wasn't approved by them, and is not referenced in any way in Homeworld 2. I don't think it's actually been referred to as "non-canon" by anyone officially though. 69.165.146.94 (talk) 17:48, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Sajuuk?

I tried looking up Sajuuk to find out exactly what it is. I get re-directed to the Homeworld main article. There's no mention of it. Nor in the discussion page. 66.153.199.181 (talk) 03:04, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Setting

The article on Galaxies in Fiction states, "The Whirlpool Galaxy or M51 was used as the basis for the galaxy in which the story of the Homeworld series of games takes place." Is that correct? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxies_in_fiction Thanks. --NotWillDecker —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.212.37.115 (talk) 01:13, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

That information seems to be based on some concept sketches for HW2, at least that's all I can find. --Execvator (talk) 08:59, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Should a minor fansite be added to external links? Seems in that case that the list should be more inclusive, or just not include fansites at all. --SquidDNA (talk) 18:12, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Fansites should not be included. TallNapoleon (talk) 22:06, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
It may go against standards (I don't know for sure), but given how rare useful information about the original Homeworld is, if the site contains any useful information and isn't just a mess of dead links it may be a significant resource and warrant inclusion. 69.165.146.94 (talk) 17:36, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Nullspace

"The inclusion of a completely null-space 3-D fighting environment...". I looked up nullspace and I don't get what the set of all vectors x for which Ax = 0 have to do with the game. Also, I think the article should have information about how choosing a race at the beginning of the game has no impact on the storyline (the information I was looking for when I visited this article). Looking at the history of the article, there used to be a note on top of the Plot subsection, but it was removed for some reason. Totsugeki (talk) 05:53, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Compatibility section added

After spending several hours searching the web for help getting Homeworld to run on Windows 7 x64, I finally came across a tip that it should be run unpatched. I reinstalled the game completely from scratch and without applying any patches, and it runs perfectly save for a few minor caveats I've mentioned in the article and, obviously, without the benefit of any of the fixes found in the 1.05 patch.

Since information about this game is sparse at best and very difficult to find amid similar information for Homeworld: Cataclysm, Homeworld 2, and discussions about these and other similar games, I thought it warranted a mention here for everyone's sake. There are a huge number of people asking about Homeworld compatibility but almost no helpful answers to be found, making this information noteworthy.

Unpatched I was able to fully complete the game, though multiplayer is probably broken in one way or another.

Due to the age of the game and the difficulty finding reliable information, I cannot reference a source. At best I might be able to link a forum post or something else of dubious nature. 69.165.146.94 (talk) 17:33, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
