Britain's Got Talent Final Results
[edit]Hollie Steel finished 6th in the public voting, beating 4 of the other contestants. As over 4,000,000 votes were phoned in, and Hollie got almost 4%, she received around 150,000 to 160,000 votes. The first 4 in the list received 77.8% of the total vote - see below. Also note that it has been pointed out that the telephone number shown for Susan Boyle during some of the scrolls of telephone numbers while voting was ongoing was actually that for Diversity; if only 2.4% of the total number of voters ended up voting for Diversity but meant to vote for Susan Boyle, the results for first and second would have been reversed. We will never know... but Hollie definitely beat 4 of the other finalists in the voting.

Fan page
[edit]Hi all. I added a link to the "External links" to Hollie's main fan page ([1]). Why did you remove it? It is a very good resource, you will find info there which is currently missing in the article, like on the current petition. They are in close contact to Jason Steel. And, if that was your concern, I am not connected to that site in any way. -Malwin (talk) 05:37, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
- Fansites are removed as per WP:FANSITE --Uksam88 (talk) 10:26, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

- That is now the official Hollie Steel website. Hassaan19 (talk) 20:27, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Dates
[edit]Dates of developments or reports should be included. We often forget that while the information is fresh in our minds - say when Armstrong walked on the moon - we forget that 5 years from now a student will be reading it for the first time and will need dates and times. That is why I put the date back on Steel and Harris. Just a thought. --Dane Sorensen (talk) 15:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Notability
[edit]This article looks to be a prime candidate for deletion under Notable for one event. Thousands of people enter talent competitions each year. Should they all have articles? Jezhotwells (talk) 07:59, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

It's on the edge. Gwen Gale (talk) 19:26, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yup, having read the discussions I would suggest that a merge of the notable information into the series article would be appropriate. Jezhotwells (talk) 15:36, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- My two cents: a merge to the main article on the competition seems like the best option. To be honest, I can't see how the last AfD was closed as "no consensus"—if I were the closing admin I certainly would have closed it as delete, given that many of the keep votes were SPAs or other random editors who clearly did not understand Wikipedia guidelines, typed in all caps, etc.—but oh well. Merging, at the least, seems appropriate. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:18, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of talk page comments
[edit]I query why User:Radiopathy deleted comments on the notability of the subject and whether a merger might be appropriate. I must ask that these are re-instated immediately. Such attempts to censor talk pages and control the discussion are contrary to core Wikipedia principles. Jezhotwells (talk) 19:38, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- Such comments as, "Ha, ha. Comparing a talent show contestant to the moon landing - very good. Jezhotwells (talk) 15:37, 28 July 2009 (UTC)" in response to another user's comments are not in keeping with policy regarding article talk pages, particularly BLPs.
- You may want to attempt another Afd, despite the closing admin's comments on the last one; you won't get "censored" there, as that's the appropriate venue.
- Likewise, if you favour merging, a template at the top of the article will get a discussion started here on the talk page.
- But don't come here to disrupt and then cry about "censorship". Radiopathy •talk• 20:25, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- I repeat - the notability of this subject is questionable as commented on here by User:Uksam88 [2] and User:Gwen Gale [3] and myself [4] and [5]. User talk:Radiopathy has removed these comments which is in direct violation of talk page etiquette. My light hearted comment re the moon landing was just that - a light hearted comment. Naming
[edit]The article was recently updated to change references such as Hollie to Steel. This is a common usage on Wikipedia but seems unsatisfactory for the following reasons:
- The article covers several members of the Steel family and so the family name alone may be ambiguous.
- The usage seems offensively abrupt, falling awkwardly between formal usage — Miss Steel — and informal — Hollie
- The repeated usage of Steel and/or personal pronouns such as she tends to be monotonous and so makes our article seem crude and poorly written.
I suggest that we improve the article by using varying phrases such as the child singer and tearful contestant. I shall perhaps make some attempt at this myself but as we already have differing versions some discussion seems best before more work is done. Colonel Warden (talk) 10:28, 30 July 2009 (UTC)#
- And I suggest that you do not remove comments from this talk page. If it gets too big then archive it. These amateur attempts at censorship will get you into hot water if they continue. It is perfectly valid to query the notability of the subject here. Describing a topic as stale in anything less than seven days is absurd. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 11:34, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- Disagree. First of all, the article only briefly mentions other members of the Steel family, they're not talked about throughout the articles; there is no ambiguity anywhere "Steel" is used, because she is understood as the primary focus of the article. And even if there were ambiguity in a sentence or two, that would not justify using "Hollie" throughout the entire article. Secondly, as for "monotonous", using "Hollie" over and over again is equally monotonous, and less professional.
- As for your suggestion of replacing her name with stuff like "the tearful contestant"...absolutely not. This kind of flowery, peacocky wording is non-neutral, unprofessional, and makes for a poor article. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:27, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- The Colonel's suggestion of "the tearful contestant" was, I'm assuming, an attempt at humour aimed at the trolls who kept disrupting this page. I wouldn't worry about it getting into the article. Radiopathy •talk• 19:31, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- You might want to think of a better insult than troll or perhaps read Wikipedia:Civility Uksam88 (talk) 14:36, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Switching back and forth from Hollie to Steel is a waste of time. It should be Steel. That is the accepted form. Nice to see some other scholar put back the fact that Steel has a manager. Furthermore, I enjoyed the comment about too much debate over new items concerning this person. We should not have to wait until Hollie Steel is dead before we can put something that has appeared recently in the media in her Wiki article. --Dane Sorensen (talk) 03:43, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Deletion
[edit]I don't see why this page is still here. Has anybody heard anything from her since BGT? No. It's clear she's not notable so can someone please AFD this and delete it once and for all? THE NAME'S BOB (talk) 14:07, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- Snow Keep - just read the article. Radiopathy •talk• 03:03, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
- She has done someething since BGT, she has signed with a record label, released a single which didn't make the charts, and has an album out in 2010. You should check her local newspaper, the Lancashire Telegraph. Hassaan19 (talk) 10:44, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Updates
[edit]Why were my updates and factual corrections deleted? They were mostly referred to from her official page and a few news articles. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Danvin27 (talk • contribs) 00:35, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't see any references other than the Hollie Steel "official" site, which we can't use per WP:ELNO, and I also didn't see any other sources for the title of the Christmas single. If you have any material from reliable news sources, by all means use them, just please create a citation for each one, or the material may be challenged and/or deleted. If you need help formatting the references, leave a note on my talk page. Radiopathy •talk• 02:18, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Sorry I'm not familiar with the rules. This was the first time I updated a page on here cause I thought I could help out with the errors on the article (Rolf Harris - it's a deal that although was reported in the papers, was a false alarm, evident by the fact that nothing came of it) and update the article as well (record contract signed in September, single scheduled for release in December and album in March). I did include a news article for her performance in Hong Kong and Preston. The problem is there isn't any press coverage on Hollie right now and most of the news comes from her, her mum and her agent Dave through her official site, so it is factually correct and should be included in an encyclopedia article as opposed to the errors that are included (quoted from The Sun and The Daily Mirror) which are hardly reliable sources. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Danvin27 (talk • contribs) 03:01, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Will this article do for her recording contract with VVR2? http://www.nigelround.co.uk/entertainers/britains_got_talent/hollie_steel/
And will this be accepted for her album, single title and performance in Manchester? http://www.prestoncitizen.co.uk/leisure/music/4724979.East_Lancashire_singing_star_Hollie_Steel_aims_for_Christmas_number_one/ http://www.accringtonobserver.co.uk/news/s/1182232_hollie_aims_to_be_a_hit_in_time_for_christmas
And this for her performance in Honk Kong? http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?pp_cat=11&art_id=90698&sid=26124234&con_type=1
Also why was the link to her official site, holliesteel.org.uk removed?
Thank you for the help.
- I did some reading, and I actually think the website squeaks by the WP:ELOFFICIAL and WP:ELMAYBE #4 criteria; I'll put it back in the infobox and see if anyone else has any other thoughts.
- All the news links look good. The only problem I see is with the source for the label name. I'm sure it will come up again somewhere else. Radiopathy •talk• 04:28, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Updates
[edit]Ok, I give up. Included information from a perfectly credible news article that appeared yesterday and cited it like the others, yet it was deleted. Not sure what's expected if that wasn't acceptable.
- Look at the Beyond Britain's Got Talent section: that's where the content went. It was moved out of the lead because it was just too long; the lead is meant to be a brief
summationsummarisation of what the reader can expect from the article. The content and ref were done very well, and are still part of the article. Radiopathy •talk• 03:40, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Infobox
[edit]Instructions Please note that Template:Infobox musical artist is clear about how this information is to be entered into the infobox and that includes listing the country of origin for a musical act. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:42, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- Instructions!?! Are you still not familiar with the concept of consensus? The long-standing practice on Wikipedia with regard to United Kingdom related articles has been to include the town, county and constituent country. It has not up to this time been the convention to also include the sovereign state. So, with that said:
- Oppose - I prefer to continue doing things the way they've always been done. Radiopathy •talk• 22:14, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- You can't just use this single oppose(your own, in fact) as reason to remove information. You cannot cite this talk page as reason to revert any edit, until you have consensus amongst editors. As no such consensus exists, you cannot say 'per talk', and expect it to have any weight.— Dædαlus Contribs 01:56, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Her home should be given in the article and infobox as Huncoat, Lancashire. Lancashire is well-known enough to provide a regional context and the link provides a way for the reader to find out more, if they wish. Higher-level geographies such as the North West, England, Britain, UK, Western Europe, EU or whatever are unnecessary and give undue weight to nationalist concerns which are irrelevant here. Colonel Warden (talk) 11:04, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Lancashire is not well known enough outside of the UK to stand on it's own; England is a more worldly, if you will, geographic reference. I understand the concern about nationalist issues, and I agree with the intent of Colonel Warden's post, which I have tried to explain to User:Koavf to no avail, but I don't feel that including "England" is controversial here since we're not arguing Steel's nationality. Radiopathy •talk• 16:59, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Given the topic, the primary readership for this article will be British and so we may assume familiarity with a major county like Lancashire which, apart from ordinary geography as taught in school, will be known to readers from the Wars of the Roses, cricket, cheese, Gracie Fields &c. Foreign readers such as people in Vietnam (which seems to especially report BGT in its press) will not be much helped by any reference to places and so a link is best for them - if they care enough they can follow the nested placename articles. This is analagous to what we do for American places where the placename and state is enough. People may not be sure where Ohio is, for example, but they can look it up through the link, if it matters. We are not addressing an envelope here and so a long, multipart address is poor style. Colonel Warden (talk) 10:10, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- Consistency The template's instructions are very simple and provide consistency to articles. It is clear from the documentation that it is to include "United Kingdom" at the end. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 03:37, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, there are no "instructions", per se, but under the parameters guideline, it does say, "Most fields are optional and the row will simply be omitted if no data is supplied." And there are no specific guidelines with regard to the United Kingdom. MPFC1969 (talk) 05:43, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Greetings An Admin needs to add new information about how the family of Steel have had to monitor her use of the Internet because of paedophiles targeting her. See http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/hyndburn/7984265.Internet_paedophiles_target_Hollie_Steel/ for source. Ironic, I started this page and now I can add to it. --Dane Sorensen (talk) 19:54, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
This seems to be a good place to add a plea to please AVOID NASTY REMARKS such as the one I deleted from the intro today. Initially I thought it was a reference to a recent performance that was unsourced. Now I believe it was unkind and not related to any recent performance.1archie99 (talk) 18:48, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Documentation, correction needed for latest entries to discography
[edit]The latest entries dated 2010 will not be available in the U.S. until Nov. 22. They are not singles. The songs listed are available in a two song album. See this page.1archie99 (talk) 12:05, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- I don't believe there is such a thing as a "two song album"; I think it's safe to assume that for at least for the present that this will strictly be a digital download. Two songs sound like a single to me. I'm tagging with citation needed rather than delete. Radiopathy •talk• 20:31, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- Her website is listing these 2 songs together as a single. This may be a carryover usage from when a 45 rpm having 2 sides was called a single.1archie99 (talk) 13:50, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

There is an album listed by Amazon.com with a 2006 release date.
[edit]Was the album, Principia listed at http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1354196344/ref=sr_grid_albumrank?ie=UTF8&field-keywords=Hollie%20Steel&index=digital-music&rd=1&redirect=true&search-type=ss&sort=albumrank as being recorded by Hollie Steel in 2006 by Amazon.com actually recorded by Hollie Steel? Can anyone shed light on this? I have been following her career via the internet including her official pages and the only place this album is listed is on Amazon. The release date contradicts the article which lists her first recording with a later release date. The samples do not sound like Hollie although this is not positive proof with the current technology being able to change the way people sound. I deleted the sentence that depended on that Amazon page, the software saved the edit before I finished the summary. Finishing summary, note that cited page lists two artists within table Hollie and Hollie Steel. Questionable as to whether Hollie is Hollie Steel1archie99 (talk) 16:24, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Children on the Titanic
[edit]There is a 52 minute documentary drama titled "Children on the Titanic" which is "ready for delivery". Steel acts in and sings in the production. Her second album contains songs and a spoken track from the film. Following is the text of an email I received from the company that produced the film.
- Hello
Thank you for your note and interest in the programme. We are in the process of discussions with DVD distributors and TV networks in different parts of the world. Activity is slow at the moment as there was so much programming for the centenary of the sinking last April - but interest is coming alive again. We may soon do a self publishing arrangement for DVD's in which case we will let you know. Meanwhile, have yiou seen the public access trailer via the following link: http://www.childrenonthetitanic.com/code-2/index.html

Full name
[edit]I would like to have the source for this long full name. Never saw it in any of the sources I have read, Hollie's sites or even the fan pages.1archie99 (talk) 15:51, 3 May 2013 (UTC) Apparently no sources exist. I reverted the long full name which had been placed in the article without any sources or reasons given.1archie99 (talk) 01:22, 6 July 2013 (UTC)onep
- Again I would like to know where "Louise" came from. It does not have to be a source that has been annointed by those among the self appointed people who think their interpretation of what is reliable is the only one; just post it on the talk page.1archie99 (talk) 17:21, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- Reverted "Louise" again. I had thought of adding Bee to her name within quotes as "Hollie Bee"' is the nickname she often uses in her postings to her official Facebook account. However, it is my understanding that Facebook is looked on as not being allowed by the guardians of strictness. It does make sense to me to use postings by Hollie to her official account as a source but I try to follow the guidelines.1archie99 (talk) 13:40, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Rally co-driver?
[edit]Really? Is there a reliable source to back this up? Radiopathy •talk• 04:05, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
- A source dated 2009 has been added but the word "rally" does not appear in it. It is a confusing addition and could be taken as vandalism. The citation while interesting does not fit with the text.1archie99 (talk) 15:07, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
- I removed the "rally co-driver" and relocated the citation to the end of the sentence. I did not remove any citations. I was satisfied with the preview of my edit. When I tried to save this edit; I was told there was an edit conflict so I left the page without saving. I thought it might be easier to start from scratch. I was surprised to see the "rally co-driver" removed and possibly a citation removed even though I had left the page before saving.1archie99 (talk) 15:45, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
- I removed rally co-driver and did some additional editing; no refs were removed. Radiopathy •talk• 15:51, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
- Possibly videos on YouTube might support what you removed. I am not going to worry about it though. I am more concerned about what went on in her life after BGT. I am surprised that the film about the Titanic remains unreleased; Hollie was so elated about appearing in it in her posts on her first Facebook page which was taken down. If you find anything at all about that; please post if only on the talk page.1archie99 (talk) 16:23, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Date tampering?
[edit]It is the latter edit where the tampering is. Changing my correction and removing the citation that supports it is 'tampering'. Note that in the video it is Hollie who states that her birthdate is the tenth. I have read the Wikipedia link that you listed in your summary of your edit and I do not see what it has do with the latter edit.1archie99 (talk) 15:56, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
- First of all, you were not logged in when you made that edit; all I saw was an IP address. I just assumed that some IP vandal changed the date. Second, you can't use a YouTube video as a source unless, for example, it's from Hollie's channel. Her official site, BTW, says she was born the 1st July.
- I considered Hollie's statement in her own words spoken in an interview for radio broadcast to be a good source and thought that the website might be in error. Since the website still says the first, I could consider her on air statement to be incorrect and chalk it up to nervousness similar to the trouble she had earlier in her life on BGT. Note that the website is not flawless; it claims that she has produced eight albums. If so, most of these must be of very limited circulation. Where does Wikipedia state that videos cannot be used as a source?1archie99 (talk) 07:01, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Merger proposal
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I note the three AfDs in 2009, none of which found consensus. Since then, our attitudes to WP:BLP1E have hardened somewhat and this person seems, in the intervening five years, to have attracted no real additional notability. I propose a merge to Britain's_Got_Talent_(series_3)#Hollie_Steel. --Dweller (talk) 10:19, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

- She's released several records in the intervening years, as well as worked on several other projects. A merge is not appropriate. Radiopathy •talk• 05:10, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
- Those records/projects, are any of them actually notable? The Rambling Man (talk) 08:00, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
- There's no evidence in the article currently that she's been involved in anything particularly notable since being on the TV show 4 years ago when she was 10. --Dweller (talk) 19:25, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
- She toured in an Andrew Lloyd Webber production in 2011 and starred in a film in 2012; what's not notable about that? More recently, she's been focusing on her education, so she hasn't been doing anything in the entertainment world, but she did not fall off the face of the earth after BGT. Radiopathy •talk• 04:39, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm. The only reference we have to the former is a self-publicity piece, and the latter film is unreleased. All of my children and many of my friends have also starred in unreleased films that I have made. I have no antipathy to the girl and would be happy for the article to be kept, if only there was evidence of significant notability outside of the one event - which is what BLP1E demands. --Dweller (talk) 14:44, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

I agree with Dweller, there is no notability here beyond the one event, so I support merger. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:08, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
- How is a poster featuring not her, but her brother, relevant to her notability? DGG ( talk ) 16:51, 8 September 2015 (UTC) .

I think this has been open long enough. In numbers terms, 4 editors wish for a merge and 2 are opposed. I'll see if I can find an admin to assess if there is consensus and close this. --Dweller (talk) 13:14, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose merge. Here are some of her accomplishments after she participated in Britain's Got Talent in 2009 (closely paraphrasing from the sources below):

She has since released a number of singles and an album and starred as Louisa von Trapp in Andrew Lloyd Webber's UK tour of The Sound of Music.
Now aged 15, she is following in the footsteps of stars like Rita Ora and Emma Bunton by studying at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London.
She will take up a place at the Urdang Academy in the capital in September, where she will train in dancing, acting and singing to help her achieve her dreams of starring on the West End stage.

The book notes:
In Season Three, sixth was Hollie Steel, who was just 10 years old when she auditioned for Britain's Got Talent as a singer. She displayed a powerful soprano voice in singing classics from well-known musicals. However, in her live semi-final performance she forgot the lyrics and broke down crying. This led to public debate about whether children as young as her should be auditioned for this type of show. Since finishing in sixth place, she had recorded six albums by the end of 2012 and performed at a number of live events, while also continuing her schooling.

IN THE singing stakes only Susan Boyle could beat her in Britain’s Got Talent last year and now 12 months later 12-year-old multi-tasker Hollie Steel, who is a ballerina as well as an operatic singer, releases her first album.
Classical crowd-pleasers such as Nessun Dorma and Ave Maria sit alongside musical numbers Edelweiss, I Could Have Danced All Night and The Music Of The Night to make a nice little starter disc.
Obviously it boils down to whether you like child singers or think they should be sent to their rooms. One to watch for fans of this sort of thing.

The penultimate paragraph in 'Singing Career' is poorly written and makes little sense:
In 2014, Hollie moved to London, UK permanently to attended the prestigious college in Islington The Urdang Academy to study a three-year course in Musical Theatre [38] to pursue a career in acting. Since then Miss Steel has gained a very large following on social media sites and posts covers on her YouTube channel (holliebsteelofficial).
I would suggest the following:

Since then Miss Steel has gained a very large following on social media sites and posts covers (to what use is the word being put in this context?) on her YouTube channel (holliebsteelofficial).
