Criticism

[edit]

The whole idea of Holiday Showdown seems to be to suggest that people who enjoy a specific type of holiday, or a specific type of lifestyle are in some way not doing so purely because they happen to enjoy it, but because they are ignorant of other options. "Yes" says the show "You might think you like hiking in Snowdonia, buts only because you haven't tried going to Benidorm" (or alternatively, "You're too boring and posh to go to Benidorm").

Like other UK reality TV shows, such as "Wife Swap" the program focusses less on the problems of coping with something new and different and far more on the goading of specific people for being "too posh" "too snooty" "too stupid" etc etc. Holiday Showdown generally uses examples of "decent working class people who enjoy a nice traditional fun holiday" being marketed as the audience's favourites, while "stupid posh brainy people who like mountain walking or touring Africa" are made the subject of general mockery to appease the audience.

The whole point of the entire program of course collapses when you consider that it doesn't really make any difference where people take their holidays; they can take them wherever the prefer. If they like going to Greece, and you hate going to Greece, so what? Let them go. You can go somewhere more to your own tastes. But then unfortunately, most of the audience are there for "posh people baiting" and don't consider.....anything.

I take your point, but I don't agree that the "Decent working class" family ever emerge in a good light, either! A lot of it is dynamics between the families, for instance in at least one episode the families were really very similar in their tastes. The dads ruined it by being so competitive with each other. Yes, the destinations are extreme, but this is to extract the maximum entertainment when it inevitably goes pear-shaped......and I hate myself for watching it!!!Luckyles (talk) 16:32, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Theme song

[edit]

Does anyone know what the funky opening title song is? This has been bugging me and would be very good for the article. I'm not quite sure why but it fells like something by fatboy slim! don't know why?--77.99.231.37 (talk) 17:10, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
