Does anybody
[edit]Does anybody know who it was that persuaded Helmut to join the SS? I cannot recall. --Der Sporkmeister 21:01, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

cleanup
[edit]Why are there 2 separate "plot" sections? The writing seems rather sloppy too. -R. fiend 23:00, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Incorrect portrayal of the Katyn massacre
[edit]I removed this for now since I have always wondered if this was even in the movie. I watched it a few days ago and didn't see anything about this:
- "The movie shows the Katyn forest massacre as being caused by the Nazis, as it was thought to have been when the movie was broadcast (1985), however it is now acknowledged by the Russian government that the Soviet NKVD were the perpetrators and a document signed by NKVD leader Lavrentiy Beria ordering the deaths of the Polish intelligentsia was released by them in the early 1990s."
Non-free images
[edit]The non-free images that were in this article did not comply with Wikipedia's policy of non-free content. Such content must be used sparingly, but that was not done here. All if not most of the actors are living, so free images are possible. In addition, it should be possible to show the uniforms through free images. There is no need to show the characters. Images need to have contextual significance, but each image existed in a section where there is only in-universe detail. The detail is basically a description of the primary source and has no inherent significance. There needs to be support from secondary sources to demonstrate the contextual significance of such images. There are guidelines that can be read here: WP:FILMNFI. See examples of non-free images with contextual significance at Changeling (film) and American Beauty (film). My initial edit explained the removal, albeit in a more succinct manner, that non-free images are not supposed to be used decoratively, and it is assumed that editors should know why. - The images are used to illustrate the appearance of the main characters and reference the uniforms which they were wearing - a major point/accomplishment of this film was the rigid detail they placed on accurate uniform information. I will give you one thing, though, it was probably unnecessary to have that many images. A single compilation of several characters in one screenshot pic would do well and would meet fair use. On that point, though (and this is just my private opinion) the copyright holders for this nearly 30 year old film are not going to come busting doors down at Wikipedia. In fact, those images stood with no trouble for several months. I don't agree with the removal, I think it was done for no real good reason other than "I gotcha" on fair use minutia, but like I said that's just my opinion and you were totally within policy to do so, so that's fine. When we re-upload the single screenshot compilation image we can discuss it further. Thanks! -OberRanks (talk) 16:51, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- It does not matter if it is not likely that the copyright holders will be busting doors down. WP:NFC says, "The use of non-free images on Wikipedia must fall within purposely stricter standards than defined by copyright law as defined by our non-free content criteria." The case for fair use has to be compelling. You argue that the images are for the characters' appearances, but there is nothing at all in the article that indicates the importance of this. In contrast, the Featured Article Changeling has an entire section about a sequence for which the use of a screenshot helps illustrate the section's context. Are there any references that can at least discuss costume design in Hitler's SS so that one of the images can be used as an example? I did a search engine test but did not seem to find any discussion of the costume details. Erik (talk | contribs) 18:46, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- I'll do some research. Like I said, no real problem here. We can work on this, find out if there's free stuff out there/compiled photos/etc and go from there. Probably wont be anytime soon, but I'll see what I can do. -OberRanks (talk) 19:44, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
