An antiquated information source

[edit]

The 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia, article: "Russia" (sic!) might have been an interesting piece of antiquated historical trivia to flip through, but it is not a reliable third-party modern-type source acceptable by our own standards. When it was published, sovereign Poland did not exist for over a hundred years already following the Partitions. Please be advised that all partisan and highly controversial material will soon be removed if it is not supported by acceptable modern source according to Wikipedia policy/guidelines. Thanks, Poeticbent talk 18:53, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The various articles about Polish-Jewish history were originally copied from the respective sections of History of the Jews in Poland. If the text has been supplemented or replaced by material from the Jewish Encyclopedia, it can probably be removed by looking at the article's edit history. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 04:16, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Update since yesterday

[edit]

Original text has been taken down within hours since yesterday. Kudos to jewishencyclopedia.com for almost unbelievably quick response. The content of the full article from the original Jewish Encyclopedia previously at http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=479&letter=R/ is no longer available. Webpage edited for its most controversial content is now available at http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/12943-russia/. That leaves us where we started. This article was started 09:34, 28 June 2005‎ by IZAK‎ with the massive +28,116 bytes under the laconic edit summary: (start). I don't believe it was copy-pasted within Wikipedia as the Detector results would indicate. Looking at the results, I also notice little touch-ups to the 1906 original, for example: the genuine sentence about the Jews "all burned slowly at the stake" was simplified in Wikipedia as: "all burned at the stake"... apparently not "slowly" anymore. Similarly, the genuine paragraph from 1906 which preceded "The first extensive Jewish emigration" (pasted into Wiki) begins with the title: "Early Jewish Slave-Traders" and speaks of "Christian slaves owned by Jews". That one paragraph was omitted from the paste up job, so it wasn't exactly mechanical.

(edit conflict) It was copied from History of the Jews in Poland on 28 June 2005, with this edit.
Regardless of how the article was started, I think we agree it's in bad shape. I guess the question is whether it's so bad that it needs WP:TNT, or whether there's something that can be salvaged. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 06:20, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bershadski

[edit]

Cited in the article:

  • Bershadski, Litovskiye Yevrei, St. Petersburg, 1883;

Is this the same person as Isaiah Bershadsky "real name" Isaiah Domachevitsky (1872-1910) Polish-Hebrew writer? All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 13:33, 15 August 2015 (UTC).[reply]
