Farms exemption
[edit]It would be great if someone with knowledge could add the change in late 2024 that means farms are no longer fully exempt, but still retain special treatment. It this citable?
- Historically, landowners - agricultural land (farms) avoids inheritance tax. Examples of wealthy people buying up many farms like Dyson. They just get someone and to manage the farm.
- Landowners still receive special treatment:
- For a couple who own a farm, the tax-free threshold where tax starts is 2,000,000, it is possibly as high as 3,000,000, either way this threshold is enormously higher than for other assets.
- so most farm owners in the UK are actually exempt.
- The more expensive farms that do qualify to pay inheritance tax, only have to pay 20%, not the 40% rate that applies to other things.

- Protests from TV celebrity Jeremy Clarkson in Dec 2024, Jeremy Clarkson's farm is in the top 10% of farm sizes, he would have to pay the tax.
- Maybe this will cause farms to decrease in value, ordinary people may be able to afford to buy a decent sized farm and make a living.
- The website https://whoownsengland.org/ has lots of information.
