Vice Bune
[edit]The following text has been removed, pending some sources being provided. The first Europeans that reached the islands in the 16th century, were a Dalmatian expedition led by captain Vice Bune in the galley Caraca sailing from Goa via the Philippines. From 1594 they detected and named the northern island Rava, then advancing southwards they named the islands of Valun, Mata, Marina, Mala, Malakula, Palenta, Nina with the exploration of Vanuatu completed at the southern island of Matas in 1597.
There is extensive discussion regarding Vice Bune (a real merchant from Dubrovnik who served the Spanish crown, but about whom verifiable details are very limited) at [1]. Apparently main WP deleted an entry about him some time ago, deciding he was a non-existant person. The few remaining references to him on google are generally based on the old WP entry.
There is significant documentation existing from Quiros' voyage, indicating they were the first Europeans the people had seen--Nickm57 (talk) 00:53, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Note: I notice all the WP entries relating to Vice Bune and alleged Ragusian exploration of/trade with the Pacific appear from two anonymous IP addresses on 28 and 29 October 2006. --Nickm57 (talk) 04:16, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm. It appears this is just a hoax that has slipped through the cracks. Good catch. I hope the other Wikipedias that have articles on this follow our example and purge this nonsense.--Cúchullain t/c 17:41, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
