On December 29, 1845, Texas became a state. Fort Gates was established soon afterwards to protect the local settlers from Indian attacks. Attacks abated when the Army set up patrols to prevent Indians from crossing the Red River in 1875. About this time, law officials also began to make the area safer for settlers. Settlers continued to stake out claims and the area developed as farming communities until World War II.
