Minimum buyin

[edit]

Right now the article says that the minimum buyin is $50k. As far as I know, you have to buy in for at least $100k, and should you happen to go broke, you can then rebuy for $50k minimum. I'm not sure, perhaps someone can check this out.

New Episodes?

[edit]

When do new episodes of this program hit the air? So far as I can discern, there is only one new episode per week, Monday at 9 PM EST, but it seems from other comments that I have been missing out on some episodes. -Abscissa 17:19, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to find a broadcasting schedule on the GSN www-pages, but no success. I didn't spend a lot of time on it, however. An overview of the programs, listing the participants for each show, would have made a nice addition to the article, by the way. Mortene 10:09, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Filming has completed for season 3, a list of the players can be found here: http://cardplayer.com/poker_news/article/3320 New players include John D'Agostino, Jamie Gold, Paul Wasicka, Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Victor Ramdin, William Chen, David Williams, Chris Ferguson, David Benyamine, Gabe Kaplan, Dan Harmetz, Dan Shak, Illya Trincher, and Brian Townsend 19:02, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Style of Play

[edit]

are there some other peeps out there who suspect that these players are being paid per flop (vs. per hour)... maybe it is my suspicious mind, because of what bob stupack was doing last season... - Abscissa 02:14, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought Stupack didn't even play one hand, so how exactly would that prove that they're paying them per flop? If they were paying them per flop, everyone would be limping in all the time. Drew88 17:43, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's what I meant, -- they paid per hour in the first season and Bob Stupack played one hand -- AA and the rest of the time he was walking around. In S2 it seems there were a lot more players per flop though, more than what i would expect. -Abscissa 18:23, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't know you were referring to the new season. Many commented on the sub-par poker playing, but I still haven't watched the new episode. Still, I doubt they're paying them per flop, that would really damage the game. Drew88 08:15, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Or it could make it more interesting... nobody wants to have someone who waits for AA, KK all the time like Stupack who only played one hand.... plus we should remember all the hands are editied for TV, not necessarily played in order, etc. I don't think it was just me, there were more players per flop on average than one would normally expect... I will have to watch the episode again - Abscissa 12:43, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From What Daniel says in his post (linked in the article) about the payment, they were only paid for sitting at the table - I didn't see season one, but if he was walking around, I assume someone else was at the table and he wasn't walking around during hands he was in. Cash?

[edit]

Is there a reason plays have piles of chips but also piles of cash on the table besides as a reminder to the audience that they are using real cash? And what is the basis for the players betting in chips vs. throwing a brick of cash in besides just whatever they feel like bettering. TheHYPO 07:03, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think it's just what you said- to remind people that, yes, this is real money these millionaires are betting with. I highly doubt it makes a difference whether they threw in chips or cash, though I'm sure it was much easier to throw out a $50,000 brick of cash than count out that many chips. -- Kicking222 01:48, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Players in Attendance but not Playing

[edit]

JC Tran was in attendance during Season 2. Daniel greeted him as he walked into the room with his posse. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.134.99.102 (talk) 03:21, 16 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Why on earth do we need this section? It seems totally trivial and useless. SmartGuy 15:30, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Freddy Deed does play in season 1. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.37.217.94 (talk) 17:35, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Getting an uneditted version

[edit]

Does anyone know where to get an uneditted version of High Stakes Poker for all seasons?

Cancelled?

[edit]

I read here:

http://www.mysportsradio.com/boards/showthread.php?t=22895

that the taping of the 4th season of HSP has been postponed indefinitely and may even be cancelled. Can anyone verify this and update the page?

Roland 18:05, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't believe everything you see on a web board. This May 16, 2007 Las Vegas Sun story describes the taping of the fourth season and says a September debut is scheduled. Casey Abell 17:18, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great article. Thanks for the link :)

2 more cards after the River shown

[edit]

Why are there 2 more cards shown after the river? I saw now at least 2-3 games, where 2 other cards followed flop, turn, river. But why? Would be interessting to add in the article, I didnt found the answer @ the homepage with the original rules.

I think you're referring to the players occasionally running the hand twice. Especially if there's a huge amount of money at risk and the odds are pretty even, sometimes the remaining players in the hand will run the turn and river twice. If the players each win once, the pot is split. If one player wins both times, he takes the entire pot. Casey Abell 22:42, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Hsp.jpg

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Biggest unsuccesful bluff

[edit]

This needs to be changed to the Patrik Antonius one against Sam Fahra in season 4. Marcus1234 (talk) 12:12, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to go ahead and update facts like that in the main article. If there's ever any dispute it will be reverted, so there's no problem with just going in and changing it. LegendLength (talk) 10:50, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Here's a page with Season 1-4 of GSN's High Stakes Poker embed from the official GSN Page on YouTube highstakespokerstream.blogspot.com Would be a better linking than the Preview of Season 3 on YouTube in my opinion! Jack 21:01, 27 July 2008 (CET)

Biggest hand

[edit]

"This was the largest pot before the 500K minimum buy-in game during the fourth season and remains the largest as a multiple of the big blind ($600)."

I feel lame for disputing this, but iirc, in the fourth season, the blinds were the same ($300, $600), but they had a forced straddle ($1200) and (optional?) double straddle ($2400). So technically the statement is incorrect. Am I right? Stevage 02:31, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Prop bets

[edit]

Does anybody have any documentation that the long delay between Seasons Four and Five (calendar year 2008 saw only reruns) was because the players objected to the producers' prohibition against "props" (side bets)? They are back this year: One had Antonio Esfandiari doing push-ups! --Tbrittreid (talk) 22:32, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Prop bets are banned in season 6. 63.66.112.5 (talk) 15:49, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Benza fired -- confirmed

[edit]

I wanted to add this... It has been confirmed that AJ Benza will not be returning to co-host in this series. http://benzaneat.blogspot.com/2009/10/gsn-playing-their-hand-all-wrong.html discussed in MULTIPLE blog entries by Benza himself which obv. confirms it, but the "bot" won't let me use his blog as a cite, not sure what to do... 96.52.153.176 (talk) 14:31, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Benza's blog is a sounding board for his (often profanity laced) rants - it's a good example of a self-published resource that is [not acceptable] according to WP guidelines. It's hardly critical that a reference is provided for this inane fact anyway, it suffices to say that Benza will not be returning to co-host HSP. You can add a [citation needed] tag if you really want to. Hazir (talk) 00:06, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Too bad

[edit]

It's too bad GSN & HSP had to ruin the show by limiting the show to professional players mostly from pokerstars.net and various unknowns. I greatly enjoyed the prior season where full tilt players were also invited to play. Phil Ivey, Sammy Farha, Mike Matusow, and Tom Dwan are all greatly missed by HSP fans! I hope GSN realizes the loss and reverts back to a non sponsored show. Adding a sponsor like Poker Stars limits the excitement we are used to seeing in the prior seasons. I can tell you for a fact that this new season is not nearly as good as the prior. And bring back Gabe as the commentator. Until then I'll be watching the reruns more than I will that of the new season. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.190.22.210 (talk) 03:15, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Big lay down

[edit]

Phil Laak mucked a full house against Johny Chan in S7. Phil had pocket 7, Johny had A-J, flop came A-Q-7, turn J, river A. I cannot remember the bet sequence of the hand except the river bet. On the river, Phil made a bet, Johny made a large raise, Phil mucked his hand quickly.

Could anyone remember any other good lay down? Maybe add a new section to the article, because lay down a strong but not the best hand is a very important part of no-limit hold'em.
