Ethnicity

[edit]

More out of curiosity than anything else... is he a Jewish-American who later acquired Japanese citizenship? Or a Japanese-American who's either converted or taken on a Jewish-looking name without converting? Or perhaps one of those rare Jewish Japanese-Americans? These days one cannot simply assume ethnicity or national origin based solely on citizenship, or name, or... LordAmeth 23:32, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He doesn't look at all Japanese; he looks like a "white" American. (This is from direct observation, aka "original research" and thus of course worthless.) I think I saw a full-page photo of him in this month's Asahi Camera or Nippon Camera (within a short B/W series on 文士 or similar), and I imagine a bit of Googling would turn up more photos. Offhand I know nothing about his nationality or (complexion aside) his "ethnicity" (two attributes that I think are hugely overblown by en:WP editors). -- Hoary 23:40, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article Name

[edit]

Concerning the article name "Hideo Levy," would it not be more appropriate to make a change to the title "Levy Hideo," "Riibi Hideo," or "Ribi Hideo," as per the Anglicized name made public by the Stanford lecture video (which is presumably an authoritative source)? I understand the page originator's logic behind inverting -- if adhering to the "Japanese style" -- what would become the presumed surname "英雄" and personal name "リービ" in an attempt to emulate the Western naming format; however, as the moniker "リービ英雄" is itself a pen-name, to invert the order of the names does not seem to mesh in this case, and furthermore, would even seem to ignore the persona the author has tried to create for himself as "Riibi Hideo." Alternately, as the author has written of his "embarrassment" of his pen-name (for example, in the interview with 水村美苗 in 『越境の声』), would there be any good argument against retitling the page under the author's birth name, "Ian Hideo Levy"? Biography

[edit]

Just as a heads-up, I added a Biography section in this edit. It's mostly done from a translation of this version of the Japanese Wiki article. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 18:06, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have removed the category of Japanese people of X descent, since there is no claim (even unsupported) that HL is Japanese citiazen. JoshuSasori (talk) 05:07, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
