Hesione and Andromeda

[edit]

Interesting parallels and contrasts with the legend of Andromeda. Both are innocent girls sacrificed as scapegoats for their parents' offenses, and are rescued by a hero. But the Andromeda followup is romantic: the hero is motivated by either love or chivalry, and marries the girl, presumably with her consent. The Hesione version is sordid: Herakles wants pay for the rescue, turns vindictive when he fails to get it, and ends up "handing over" Hesione ( like a piece of property) to a friend. Small wonder that the Andromeda version is more popular, even with a less famous hero and city.71.59.43.26 (talk) 02:04, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
