Hercules Ross's older brothers

[edit]

I would be very interested to know of the source for (and any further details relating to) John Ross's first wife and family.

Hercules Ross's older brothers

[edit]

The source for John Ross's first wife and offspring is a bible in the possession of the writer's family belonging to Hercules Ross. This bible as well as a number of other Ross-related items have been passed down from the writer's great times two grandmother, Elizabeth Ross (1819-1850). In it Hercules inscribes the names and dates of birth of all the children born to his father and his first wife, Janet Haldane — four sons of whom the first "died after a few days", thereafter 1. John, 2. James and 3. Charles — and his second wife, Elizabeth Fullarton "grand-daughter of [John] Fullarton Bishop of Edinburgh" — 5th son Colin, 1st dau. Margaret, 6th son William, 2nd dau. Mary, 7th son David, 8th son Daniel, 9th son Hercules, 3rd dau. Helen, 10th son James and lastly 4th dau. Mally, who "died an infant". The dates of birth specified tie in with records in the OPRS variously at Kilmarnock, Dumfries, Glasgow, Fordoun, Benholm and latterly Port Glasgow. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.0.192.66 (talk) 12:55, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much indeed. How fascinating. Hercules Ross was my greatx4-grandfather and you may be aware that there are a fair number of his descendants worldwide who are interested in his story and antecedents. I have copies of letters written at the beginning of the 20th century speculating as to his ancestry. The family tradition that has come down to me is that John Ross's father was Robert Ross, who married a Mary Colquhoun "of the family of Luss". Robert Ross is supposed to have been some illegitimate connection of the Lords Ross of Halkhead, but to have fallen out with that Hanoverian family at some stage due to his Jacobite leanings and to have died in France. Do you have any information bearing on these points? Would you be interested in receiving copies of such information as I have? If you prefer, you can e-mail me via my user page. Again, many thanks. --45ossington (talk) 17:47, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
