Appropriate level of detail in entry descriptions

[edit]

The entry

is better than

because:

  • MOS:DABPEOPLE says to include birth and death years when known.
  • MP is a disambiguation page and means many things.
  • Member of Parliament (unlinked) would be incorrect because dozens of countries have parliaments.
  • "Member of the British Parliament" or "Member of Parliament of the UK" would be better than "MP", but to associate him with England specifically, not Wales or Scotland or Ireland, England should be mentioned.
  • In the two of the three examples listed at MOS:DABPEOPLE, the country of the respective John Adams is specifically mentioned, suggesting that mentioning countries is a good thing to do.

The entry

  • Henry Lott (murderer), American whiskey trader who murdered Inkpaduta's brother in 1852

is better than

  • Henry Lott (murderer), whiskey trader, see Inkpaduta

because:

  • His life years are unknown and the murder date is the only way to anchor his life in world history.
  • In the two of the three examples listed at MOS:DABPEOPLE, the country of the respective John Adams is specifically mentioned, suggesting that mentioning countries is a good thing to do.
  • There is no provision anywhere on Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages for "see" and no reason to use "see" when we can reference Inkpaduta without "see".
