9th vs 10th Earl of Kent.
[edit]- Renamed page to reflect Doyle's position found in The Official Baronage (p. 283), which overlooks the de jure "earldom" of Henry Grey as he never used the title, and his half-brother, Richard Grey, 3rd Earl of Kent, had lost most if not all of the property associated with the title. - On the other hand the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography does make this Henry Grey the 10th Earl. If there are different views, I think the usual thing would be to have the discussion on Earl of Kent#Earls of Kent, eighth Creation (1465); we have to go with one or other view in the actual titles we use, and typically I'd support the ODNB as representative of current scholarship. - There are no 1904 errata adjustments for this article. Your position is supported by Burke's Extinct Peerage as well, p. 252.
- "Sir Henry Grey, of Wrest, co. Bedford, who should have been 7th Baron Grey de Ruthyn, and 4th Earl of Kent, but from the narrowness of his estate he declined assuming the peerage."
- Having made this point, the subsequent earls of Kent are numbered as if Henry Grey, of Wrest, co. Bedford was the 4th, based upon birth. As ODNB accepted this POV, and it is widely accepted as reflected by existing articles, I will correct those changes made to reflect this point of view to include the inline citations based upon Burke, but noting the alternative POV held by Doyle. I'll also make these points in new section of Earls of Kent page if it has not already been done. CUoD (talk) 00:31, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
