Sourcing for Brooke's change in The Earl of Essex
[edit]There is no need for a citation, because this comes from the Works themselves. In the posthumous works, his daughter wrote the prefatory material and speaks of his horror at offending Johnson. She doesn't say that the line was changed, but the line is simply gone from the play, so Brooke changed it. The Works are available on microfiche in Four Centuries of the British Stage, but I cannot provide a full bibliographic citation off the top of my head.
