"referring to biblical texts"

[edit]

"According to Komen, Tennekes supported this decision by referring to biblical texts."

I wonder if this is an appropriate quote for this BLP. Uncorroborated, translated from Dutch and has (at least) a whiff of malice, or score-settling, Komen is a fellow KNM retiree and former colleague of Tennekes. The source appears to be a self-published article by Komen, ordinarily not acceptable for a BLP. Added diff here by an IP. Oddly, Tennekes has no page in the Dutch or German editions.

Comments on dropping this bit? TIA, Pete Tillman (talk) 15:20, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removed per WP:BLPSPS. --Pete Tillman (talk) 15:16, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Pete; glad you are checking this article and others. We actually need to make sure all scientists in Category:Climate change skeptics (scientists) such as this one do not have this kind of source material for their references, removing it if so, as you have done, even drastically removing them from the category and list if necessary. Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 15:40, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually i do have a problem with deleting the part. While i agree one has to be careful using sources, Gerbrand Komen was research director Climate Research and Seismology of the RNMI. Sorry guys, but this isn't self-published material by a random "Mr. Nobody". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.82.8.112 (talk) 03:49, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please read WP:BLPSPS. Sorry, self-published is absolutely against policy: "Never use self-published sources" for BLPs. Thanks, Pete Tillman (talk) 05:31, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
83.82.8.112, you are correct for wanting to give Dr. Komen the respect and credibility he deserves. This is a completely different issue; if this source is self-published, Wikipedia doesn't allow it for articles about living persons because it omits a publisher who would otherwise be an intermediary, who would double-check or filter the work, if you will. Prhartcom (talk) 05:56, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure there is "an intermediary, who would double-check or filter the work, if you will" Current source is a journalist who is quoting Tennekes, without any fact-checking. Making a "Tennekes says" versus a "Komen says". Komen's claim Tennekes was fired for his personality finds some confirmation in the interview used as a souce for his firing. The interview reads (google translate) : Tennekes himself admits that he has never been the easiest . "I was a cross-head and have a horrible temper" Still not convinced the Komen remark doesn't belong in wikipedia. I don't care what the "WP rules" say, rules have a reason and can ans should be interpreted. The rule serves keeping the self-decelared geniusses out, not research directors of the KNMI. His former position makes him an "expert" by default, no matter the WP-rules 23:57, 28 December 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:A03F:189C:B800:3417:AD0F:7E9B:56A0 (talk)

I'm sorry, but there really isn't any wiggle-room on using self-published sources in BLPs. Please read WP:BLPSPS. BLP violations are taken seriously here. --Pete Tillman (talk) 04:45, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

BLP noticeboard

[edit]

Section = 109 BLP articles labelled "Climate Change Deniers" all at once. This article was placed in a "climate change deniers" category. After discussion on WP:BLPN and WP:CFD the category was deleted. Peter Gulutzan (talk) 19:41, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
