After researching the etymology of 'small black man' I have to agree with the ecologists who describe the dark irish or the dark italians as just not being as fair as others from those european countries and allow that conclusion with him not being african-american. What the dutch have as a 'small black man', still, could mean just that. Still, they do get that from somewhere in their gene pool, it's just not provable at this time. The use of the privateer narrative to explain the role each man had to play is essential to laying the life of a second in command out. Lots have been written about W. Kydd, and about his being wrongly hanged for piracy. Thats not the intent here, but without that backstory, how else can Hendrick be brought to the fore? Everything that Kydd does on board has to have the agreement of his quartermaster, else one or both would soon be over the side. When the crew mutinied, they left them both on the A galley along with the sick and infirm, for in bringing a pirate crew to fight pirates, it was inevitable that the men would balk at being the worlds policemen. With all the booty to be had, going over to Cullifords floating pirate ship was better than staying in a cholera infected wood-rotted ship that would not make it back home. So all this backstory makes for the whole of the picture in assessing the life he led. Robco311 (talk) 08:46, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
The first Muslim in new amsterdam was also kin to a dutch pirate and was also called black. He was tossed from the colony in 1640, having been the instigator of many disputes with his neibors who considered him a crime wave, accused of 15 of the 73 crimes reported in 1638-1639. He owned much land north of the wall and in brooklyn, founding new utretch and conye eylaynt, or island of rabbits, coney is. along with Bushwick which he gave to a freedman to farm. His multi racial heritage is not in dispute, while hendricks is.
Another irony is that when the adventure prize was burnt off madegascar for its metal and sunk, the mutineers had plundered it but divers found it to have a floor of metal, a piece of which was brought up, turning out to be a 121oz silver ingot, lending credence to treasure hunters claims of a vast unfound Kydd hoard. Problems
[edit]Much of the content of this article had nothing whatever to do with van der Heul. This article is not supposed to be an account of Kidd's expedition, or the history of the Montaukett peoples. One has to read paragraph after paragraph before leaning anything about van der Haul's connection to most of the content. Also, many of the sources seem to contradict the claims made here, especially about the Octavius. The article on the Octavius says nothing about ven der Haul, and the cited articles here make no mention him either - indeed the Octavius story is generally seen as a legend, not as verifiable history. van er Heul's association with it seems to be entirely an invention of the game Assassin's Creed [1]Paul B (talk) 16:58, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
