True Height of Hemmed-In-Hollow Falls?
This article initially stated 187 feet as the height of Hemmed-In-Hollow Falls. The reference given for this statement was "many locals agree that the drop itself is 187 feet."
On their website, the National Park Services currently (August 2007) says the height of Hemmed-in-Hollow falls is "approximately 204 feet." This is consistent with Ken Smith's authoritative "Buffalo River Handbook"[1] where he says the falls is "a measured 204 feet."
Then there is the direct measurement that was conducted by Tim Ernst and a few friends in March 2002. A contemporaneous online journal accout of that measurement is at http://www.cloudland.net/cloudlandmar02.html. In his online journal, Ernst reports that the sheer drop height of the falls was found to measure 211 feet by rapelling out to the lip of the falls and measuring down with a 300 foot tape. In his Arkansas Waterfalls book[2], Ernst cites 209 feet, which he has confirmed to me is the correct height. That is the height I have cited in the Wikipedia article on the Buffalo National River.
