Cut Ukrainian
[edit]Seems irrelevant to describe her as Ukrainian-American, unless wikipedia is going to add something about the ethnicity of every person listed. She's American, period.

- Украинцы и русские считают ее Ukrainian. и я так считаю.
- Translation: "Ukrainians and Russians believe its Ukrainian. And I think so." I'd be curious to learn more about her background -- where is her mother from, and her father, their careers, her siblings, etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.161.55.123 (talk) 19:11, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
- Украинцы и русские считают ее Ukrainian. и я так считаю.
If nationality is the point, then she's obviously American. "Ethnicity" or whatever to call it would have to be classified as, uh, "mixed" I guess - her father was Ukrainian, her mother is German, and she grew up trilingually, in addition to English speaking in Ukrainian and German with her parents respectively. 91.33.228.39 (talk) 07:03, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
- To be fair, the first thing I thought after reading about her was "where does that name come from?" (it sounds Scandinavian). At the very least it's a harmless trivia point; and according to this story she speaks Ukrainian and visited the place back in 1997, so it's not as if NASA have been trying to hide it. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 15:29, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- I am an American of Ukrainian heritage, same as she is. We both used to belong to Plast a Ukrainian scouting organization. I know that her Ukrainian Heritage is important to her. Gamweb (talk) 20:08, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Fainting
[edit]Needs to be noted that she fainted (twice!) during a post-mission news conference. Fairly notable: http://www.google.com/search?q=Heidemarie+Stefanyshyn-Piper+faint - Ageekgal (talk) 15:22, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- I would say no to being it put in the article. I don't think its notable, simply because most astronaut's at some point feel ill during there re-adaptation. Its the fact that this happened in public that we know about it, otherwise we wouldn't have known. If you add this to this article, then all the other astronauts who have gotten sick because of space flight, and that will be a lot.--Navy blue84 (talk) 23:49, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. It's more trivia than notable and trivia doesn't belong. - Ageekgal (talk) 18:21, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- I guess I will be the third vote to delete this paragraph. Gamweb (talk) 04:32, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Keep it. Regular people rarely faint, let alone astronauts. It isn't trivia.Fletcherbrian (talk) 14:07, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Contact
[edit]I currently have email contact with former astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and may be able to ask her specific questions to expand her article, and bring it up to B Class. Any suggestions? Gamweb (talk) 21:07, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
- Just having contact with her is not good enough. All information needs to be able to be sourced to a reliable third party source.--NavyBlue84 21:54, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you, but I am aware of the need for citations. Perhaps you can offer a different suggestion. Gamweb (talk) 22:46, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
- Not everyone is aware of it, I was merely stating a fact. I also remind you to keep it civil. While the way your comment doesn't bother me, someone else might take offense with it.--NavyBlue84 11:40, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
Comments copied from Wikiproject Military History
- Ask her what were the specific high points of the two space missions - right now we've only got the tool bag - and we can cover those from open sources - massive amounts around. Also details of the first part of her Navy career and duties now. IMHO, also comments if WP:V-able on the future place of humans in space. Buckshot06 (talk) 13:44, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- You could ask what some good published sources about her are (eg, if she collects newspaper clippings about herself, which ones are particularly accurate and useful as sources). Nick-D (talk) 04:09, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
- Good suggestions, thank you. I am going to copy this to her Talk page. Gamweb (talk) 10:46, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- She stopped responding to me. I probably annoyed her too much with my questions. :-( Gamweb (talk) 13:01, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
Current Assignment
[edit]- I found a Military article from 2010, says that she is "Chief Technology Officer for the Chief Engineer of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)". ONR Distinguished Lecture: CAPT Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper. Maybe the Navy has her doing a lecture circuit. She's kind of high-profile to put in any usual Naval post I suppose. Gamweb (talk) 11:15, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
- Her current Naval Assignment is spelled out in this PDF document at MIT: Captain Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper USN Gamweb (talk) 16:15, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

- I found some good quotes from her at this link. Maybe parts of her two quotes can be added to her page: Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper '84, Astronaut Gamweb (talk) 10:54, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Visit to Ukraine, Jan-Feb 2007
[edit]A heading for Capt Heide's visit to Ukraine in 2007 should be added to the article. Her Ukrainian heritage is important to her. Gamweb (talk) 15:55, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
- Visit of the NASA Astronaut Heidemarie M. Stefanyshyn-Piper to Ukraine
- During her visit to the land of her ancestors, Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper is surprised and happy with the way she was met by her countrymen
- Here we go, a citation for some of her activities and memberships in the Ukrainian-American community can be extracted here. Gamweb (talk) 16:42, 3 May 2011 (UTC) Manor College Graduation. Thursday, May 13th 2010
Apparently, the President of Ukraine presented Captain Heide with the Order of Princess Olga (its mentioned on the Russian and Ukrainian versions of the article) but I cannot find a citation for this in English. Gamweb (talk) 06:40, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I'm responding to a request at the Women's History project. I incorporated the "Personal info" section into the "Early life" biographical section; these should not be separate. From the personal info I deleted a sentence about her recreational activities; to me these were trivial. (I don't agree, however, with the point raised above about her Ukrainian-American heritage; this is standard biographical information re: the subject's parents and childhood community, and not trivial.) I tagged the fact about her ranking among spacewalkers, as it doesn't seem to correspond with the list article on the subject: List of cumulative spacewalk records (perhaps I'm misunderstanding this). I also added a few links to the intro, but don't feel strongly about them. The more technical subject matter I'll leave to those better equipped. Cynwolfe (talk) 20:35, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Forgot to mention the gallery: In my view it would be better to place the photos in the sections to which they pertain, so that they illustrate the article. If there is a consensus that this would be better (it would certainly be more conventional), I'd be happy to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and undertake the mechanics of editing. Cynwolfe (talk) 20:40, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Anyone else lost a $100,000 tool bag in space?
[edit]Has any other astronaut done this? Fletcherbrian (talk) 14:03, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Stefanyshyn-Piper pronounced "Losing the tool bag wasn't the high point of the EVA". Is this the stupidest thing she has said?Fletcherbrian (talk) 19:11, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
