Implementations

[edit]

Are there any real-world implementations of such an exchange? The Homosexualist (talk) 17:47, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As it turns out, yes! At least Texas, California, Florida, and North Carolina dabbled in it. But proponents are pretty quiet about them, because many have failed. I will add some information about that to the article. Pepe Silvia (talk) 22:10, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Everybody, pro- and opponents alike, are strangely quiet about FEHB, the program that covers some 8,000,000 federal employees, their family, retirees, and Congress... It's entirely successful, praised by liberals and conservatives alike, and moreover it's very similar to the ACA. The silence is... odd. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fazookus (talkcontribs) 17:02, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't find this silence odd at all. The biggest current scam to raise funds for individual conservative Republican politicians and for this legislative conference as a whole is to hold government funding hostage with a view to defeating healthcare reform (which is increasingly showing signs of being successful and highly beneficial). With such a large swindle in progress (threatening the shutdown of the US government and even defaulting on the national debt, risking the integrity of social security and other large-scale governmental programs), politicians and even news agencies are understandably fearful of getting involved in such a big potential controversy. There have been 41 Congressional votes so far to try to defeat "Obamacare", but this 42nd attempt is potentially the first having such high stakes. In politics, silence is golden. David Spector (talk) 16:46, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone have a list of these plans with the associated costs of each? Reciting the line from the government without any factual information is not being neutral. Maybe you should consider a disclaimer stating these are government estimates.75.179.153.221 (talk)chefantwon —Preceding undated comment added 22:54, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Country?

[edit]

This article is set up as a worldwide definition and description but only serves to cover the US (which is possibly all the topic can cover.) The lead should be reworked to indicate the country it is dealing with instead of waiting for a reader to make a connection later on in the article (and many will not make the connection and be left confused.) Canterbury Tail talk 19:00, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fully agree. US-based editors frequently forget that the USA is just one country in the English-speaking world. It's embarrassing. David Spector (talk) 16:48, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also agree. I've just gone ahead and changed the intro a bit to reflect that. :-) One more thing though—would it be appropriate to also add "(United States)" to the article's title (rename + redirect)? ctxppc (talk) 07:59, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No. Parenthetical qualifications like that are only appropriate if there is a possibility of confusing two different things. There is no other thing (different country) here. JRSpriggs (talk) 11:10, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Israel has a similar system, but they don't seem to use the word "marketplace" for it, so disambiguation probably isn't necessary. --Alexbook (talk) 01:28, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Limit to Price Variation

[edit]

(a) (1) (A) (iv) on the cited document states that Tobacco use can cause a plan to vary by 1.5 to 1. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.173.6.110 (talk) 20:01, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HIX Info Per State?

[edit]

I think that it would make sense to see, on this page, a list of the states of the US and what each is doing or not doing or anti-doing about an HIX. When I have put up list-like things, though, I seem to get people saying that I have taken something copyrighted, even if Feist v Rural Telephone would seem to suggest that just the act of putting something in a list does not make it copyrightable as a list. But different places do have lists, but they have a slant. If I find three different sources that have a list for each state and list each each state, referring to one item from each of these sources for each state, am I going to have that yanked by someone? I am talking here about referring to the fact posited by the statement, not copying the text of the statement. RayKiddy (talk) 20:38, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This section uses clearance as the reason "some believe" that exchanges failed in Texas and California. But this seems impossible. Clearance is the forcing, such as through price adjustment, of economic equilibrium. But equilibrium is the healthiest functioning of any market, in the absence of other factors. Equilibrium could never be a reason for the failure of a market. This section needs fixing. Also, "some" is a weasel-word that needs clarification. David Spector (talk) 16:12, 20 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

State-based exchanges

[edit]

In case it helps, Remember created, and I been adding to, a template for the PPACA:

Now, I don't know what federally-facilitated exchanges will look like or be called, but I have at least tried to add the names of state-based exchanges (included those that states intend to create e.g. Illinois, Iowa - initially going with federally facilitated exchanges). Feel free to add the template, if you think it's worthwhile. My main point in bringing it up here is that it may help whoever is expanding the state-based exchanges section (or even create the red linked articles).

The following sources I used, and may help: "State Health Insurance Marketplace Profiles". Kaiser Family Foundation.
"State Decisions For Creating Health Insurance Exchanges, as of May 28, 2013 - Table". Kaiser Family Foundation. May 28, 2013.
"State Decisions For Creating Health Insurance Exchanges, as of May 28, 2013 - Map". Kaiser Family Foundation. May 28, 2013. Sb101 (talk|contribs) 12:23, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Employers dropping insurance for part-timers

[edit]

Someone removed this section with this edit summary: "This was not to do with the exchanges, and it covered in the main PPACA article". I disagree and will revert. What are your views? Ottawahitech (talk) 19:19, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Requiring enrollment before information gathering is allowed

[edit]

I seem to remmeber adding this concern a while ago(?) but since I cannot easily locate it I added it again, this time with a more elaborate source. XOttawahitech (talk) 16:36, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How come some states do not offer Platinum plans?

[edit]

Just wondering why there are no Platinum plans offered at Washington state? XOttawahitech (talk) 00:03, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I moved the links to commercial web sites from the See also section to the External links section, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't have removed them altogether. Perhaps the more knowledgeable editors could have a look at them and decide whether they properly belong here. --Alexbook (talk) 16:12, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's 2014

[edit]

Can we edit down the info on the history of the marketplaces? Seems like people looking for this article in the future are going to be wanting more info on how the marketplaces work and less on how they came to be. Just my $0.02. --Alexbook (talk) 00:05, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexbook: I completely agree with your assessment that many readers are looking for more practical information here. I for example would love to find out how many of the people who signed up since the exchanges opened did not have prior health insurance. How we do this without losing the good information collected by many is a complex question, XOttawahitech (talk) 15:54, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that we should edit down the info on the history of the marketplaces. Innab (talk) 00:54, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaii Health Connector Marketplace Closed

[edit]

Article needs updating to reflect that the Hawaii Health Connector Marketplace closed in 2015, per its article. 2600:1702:3790:1520:C2B:B236:4E16:3F92 (talk) 04:20, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
