216.244.12.76 I need to talk to you
[edit]Hi, I am an administrator, Xinyu, and I got a report from ProfesorPaul, about how you've been, "vandalizing" EVERY SINGLE EPISODE OF The Twilight Zone. Discuss your intentions, what you have editted, fixed up, and under what pretext you have for doing so. I need you to tell me all the information you can get, and I promise both you and ProfessorPaul, this problem would be negotiable, once the facts has been laid bare, and then I'll see that NPOV, justice, and peace would be restored on this article. Thank you, please reply on my user TALK page. Thank you. --Lord X 01:36, 20 June 2006 (UTC)User:Xinyu
This Hitler as Jack the Ripper?
[edit]I just saw this episode for the first time yesterday, and it struck me that "Hitler" claimed, "I invented darkness!" Could this form actually be a malevolent spirit that takes on a host every so often, and it appears to Hopper's character as Hitler because that's the best way Hopper can understand him? Could this same figure have appeared to Hitler himself as Napoleon? To Napoleon as, say, Julius Caesar? To Caesar as Alexander the Great? And so on?
There are quite a few links, including actors and music composer Jerry Goldsmith, between The Twilight Zone and the original Star Trek series. I wonder if this episode inspired the ST:TOS episode Wolf in the Fold, in which a malevolent spirit absorbs a host and kills women, one of the hosts being Jack the Ripper? James Blish wrote that ST:TOS episode. Maybe this TZ episode inspired him.
This episode also brings to mind the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil". -- Pacholeknbnj, 3:10 PM EST, Jan. 2, 2007
- Interesting idea. Serling seems to use the ghost to personify intolerance, specifically racial intolerance; there's nothing to suggest that Alexander, Caesar or Napoleon were bigots. On the other hand, maybe he appeared to Andrew Jackson before the trail of tears, Torquemada before the Inquisition, etc... Either way, I like you idea. 213.181.226.21 (talk) 12:40, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Viewer reaction?
[edit]I recall reading that Serling received a lot of mail for this episode, criticising him for portraying Hitler as unsympathetic(!?). If that can be sourced it seems notable for inclusion. -- Irrevenant [ talk ] 22:37, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
- It would be good to add that to the article if you can find a reliable reference. This is one of the more overtly political Twilight Zones episodes, and I suspect that some people were motivated to respond one way or another. Wastrel Way (talk)Eric
Hate mail
[edit]Some articles I have read indicate that Rod Serling and his staff received racist and anti-Semitic hate mail following the running of this episode. This would be worthy of inclusion. Dustin (talk) 17:13, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
The change I made in the plot synopsis regarding Vollmer's relationship with Ganz
[edit]Vollmer does not live with Ganz, though he apparently stays at Ganz's apartment on occasion. Ganz is apparently an old neighbor of Vollmer's family who took pity on Vollmer as a boy.
